ASPE Report: Best Practices and Barriers to Engaging People with Substance Use Disorders in Treatment
FacebookLinkedInTwitter
The 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) found that even though 20.8 million people aged 12 years or older had SUD, only 3.7 million people received SUD treatment. Moreover, only about 48 percent of patients who entered SUD treatment, completed it.

In response to the 2015 NSDUH survey results, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) initiated a study to determine how higher-performing health plans improve initiation and subsequent engagement in SUD treatment.

The report, which is titled Best Practices and Barriers to Engaging People with Substance Use Disorders in Treatment, synthesizes the results of quantitative analyses of commercial health plan data and qualitative interviews with Medicaid and commercial plans to determine health plan and other factors that influence initiation and engagement in SUD treatment.
