Medical Impacts of Addiction

Audience:
Substance abuse and mental health counselors, social workers, nurses, recovery counselors and interested human services professionals.
Purpose:
While we often focus on the emotional, societal and financial aspects of addiction, during this workshop we will focus on the calamitous effects on the body’s vital organs. Additionally, we will explore the addicted brain.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop:  
  • We will have explained the deleterious effects of alcohol and addictive substances on the liver, pancreas, kidneys, heart, and circulatory system, along with muscles, skin and reproductive system.
  • We will have also focused on the addicted brain and what predisposes the brain to addiction, along with how alcohol and drugs damage it’s circuits.
  • We will have talked about how childhood trauma and drug exposure alter the brain, including special reference to the risks of marijuana in adolescence.
Faculty:
David Paulsrud, M.D., is the Medical Director at Jackson Recovery Centers. He has over 50 years of medical experience and has been with Jackson Recovery Centers for 30 years. Prior to his work at Jackson Recovery, Dr. Paulsrud served as an orthopedic surgeon in Sioux City and served as a doctor in the Army for 11 years, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Dr. Paulsrud has been honored with several local awards including, Sertoma Service of Mankind Award, AID Center Distinguished Community Leadership Award, and Morningside College Honorary Doctorate in Community Service. He also served on the Sioux City City Council from 1987-1992. Dr. Paulsrud received his medical degree from the University of Iowa.
Rachel Wurth, MSN, ARNP FNP-BC, is the Assistant Medical Director at Jackson Recovery Centers. She has provided medical services for Jackson since 2011. Rachel received her Nursing diploma degree from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1993. She earned both her Bachelor’s (’08) and Master’s (“11) of nursing science from Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. Rachel is a certified family nurse practitioner through the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center). Rachel is a member of the Iowa Nurse Practitioner Society, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Rachel has worked most of her professional career serving women, children and families.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs):
Program approved for 3 hours of continuing education with IBSAC for Iowa Substance Abuse Counselors and 3 hours of continuing Social Work education. Jackson Recovery Centers is an Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners approved provider #0241.
