Recovery Walks! 2015

Last year, 23,000 people joined Recovery Walks! to celebrate recovery, making it the largest recovery activity in the nation.  With support, we can show an even larger constituency of consequence (an organized voice of people in recovery) to elected officials.

Given the widespread impact and societal cost of substance use disorders, it's important for communities to end stigma, to make prevention, treatment, and recovery support available and accessible for all who need them.

Recovery Walks! highlights the positive impact of recovery and gives hope to those struggling with addiction that thriving in recovery is possible.  Individuals can participate by forming a team, sponsoring a team, walking, or by sponsoring a walker.  At Recovery Walks! 2015, PRO-ACT will be providing free Naloxone education to reduce the number of premature loss of life due to overdose, and there will be a voter registration booth.

Join us to end stigma and to give millions more the opportunity to receive treatment for substance use disorder.  Everyone knows someone in recovery.  Walk with them and celebrate their efforts to fight this disease.
We pay taxes, we vote, and we each contribute to our community's well-being.  Together we can eliminate the shame and embarrassment associated with this disease and save lives!  Together we can show decision makers that individuals, families and communities want to end stigma!  We can't afford to be silent anymore.  Register to walk at www.recoverywalks.org.

Be sure to register!  It's free! Let's make our voices heard to end stigma and to end discrimination!

On Monday, August 17, a group of PRO-ACT volunteers set out to Pottstown to not only hear about the current budget crisis facing the Commonwealth, but to also show our political leaders that people in recovery are engaged and paying attention to what is going on in Harrisburg.

The Press Conference had some very compelling testimony; one woman (A Certified Peer Specialist) shared how Recovery Support Services helped her become an independent, productive member of society.
During Q&A, Tara Lawley, a PRO-ACT Volunteer, had this to say:

"It has been proven 30 days is not enough to be put back in society and expect them not to struggle. Measures need to be in place for extensive outpatient with peer guidance of others who are in recovery. More beds need to be opened, insurance companies should pay for a mandatory 90 days, and outpatient should be better structured. You cannot expect to detox for two weeks, get therapy for two and be thrown back in society. What's next?"

Ms. Lawley's brother recently passed away due to an overdose.

Roadblocks to Recovery

Gary A. Enos discusses the different issues that many men face when they enter recovery in his article,
Men and women are different and should be treated as such even in recovery.

The push is for treatment and therapies to be created that are more gender friendly and that those working with individuals in recovery are more aware and have an interest in gender specific needs.  You can read the full article here.

 The INTERRUPTED Program
The INTERRUPTED curriculum was created by Dauphin County Pennsylvania Drug and Alcohol Services to educate at-risk youth and prevent initial or further experimentation with substances. The program targets Middle and High School aged students and is designed to Interrupt at-risk behaviors and replace risk factors with protective factors.  INTERRUPTED offers four separate curriculum: Underage Drinking, Tobacco, Marijuana and Prescription Drugs.

In the 2014-15 school year, The Council's Prevention Department facilitated the INTERRUPTED - Underage Drinking unit to eight groups throughout Bucks County totaling 140 students.  The pictures below were created by some of the Middle School students.

For more information on INTERRUPTED, please contact Jessica Schwartz via email or call 215-230-8218 ext. 3158.

Partnership for Drug-free Kids

Were you impressed by the sportsmanship shown by a teen this past year? Did the youth coach of your child’s team take the time to demonstrate the meaning of healthy competition?

Now is the time to honor your local student athlete and youth coach.

In conjunction with Major League Baseball Charities, we are recognizing outstanding student athletes and youth coaches in any sport – on and off the playing field – who embody the spirit of teamwork and healthy, drug-free competition.

Nominate your community’s youth sports heroes for the 6th annual Commissioner’s Play Healthy Awards contest! The awards are a part of our joint efforts, including the Play Healthy website, to educate families about the risks of steroids and performance-enhancing substances.

“I cannot begin to thank you for giving youth such a fulfilling experience and opportunity. It will forever lead her, inspire her, shape her future and commit her to serve others in her community and (what will undoubtedly be) her long, splendid life."

-Holly Jordan, nominated Kelsey Barrett, student-athlete winner of the 5th annual Commissioner’s Play Healthy Award

One winning youth coach and one student athlete will receive prizes, including a trip for themselves and one special guest to New York City.

Plus, join us in spreading the word on Facebook and Twitter with these sample posts:
