Millions of families struggle to get insurance coverage for treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. Despite a federal law protecting consumers seeking treatment, there are countless barriers to getting care covered by insurance and little enforcement of this decade-old law.
The good news: we’ve just had a big win for families. Earlier this week, a federal judge found UnitedHealthcare illegally denied patients behavioral health care by using defective criteria to evaluate medical necessity for treatment.
There is still more work to be done to make quality treatment more accessible and affordable, but this is a huge step in the right direction.
