Thoughts from the CEO's Desk
Greetings Friends, Colleagues, and Fellow Professionals,
How can it be the end of 2019?! Time seems to be the most precious gift. We make time, spend time, give our time (and sometimes even waste time) as we manage our busy lives. Our time is valuable so let us all spend it doing what we love most! At Hired Power, we have each had a whirlwind year of stretching and learning. Throughout all the joy and discomfort, we still choose to embrace each day with the most sincere gratitude for our time, our team, and our opportunities to grow. And we could not allow this year to end without sending out our sincere appreciation for all of you, our friends and colleagues.
In gratitude and giving, we find our greatest joy! As you know, three years ago, we decided to expand our home office Holiday Open House into a larger off-site event with a greater purpose. This year, our 3rd annual Jingle and Mingle was a huge success! Together, with Capstone Treatment Center, and 33 (yes, thirty-three!) other co-sponsors, we came together for an afternoon of friendship, food, donations, and gifts. We filled bins of food for the local pantry at Mariner's Church in Irvine, CA, and we gathered mountains of toys for the children at Miriam's House in Los Angeles and New Directions for Women in Costa Mesa. With all of our co-sponsors, we were able to feed 300+ event attendees and still had surplus of funds.
With that surplus, and our own Hired Power gift budget, we decided to keep giving! With this we were able to fulfill many items from the 'wish list' of Miriam's House.
It is amazing what good we can do in our communities, both individually and as we come together. What a gift it is to be part of a professional field that has the constant focus to do good. As we continue to share in this season of gratitude and giving, I thought the Harvard Medical research study on gratitude was quite fitting. May you read the article linked below and reflect on what the research does show.
Our team at Hired Power sends our greatest wishes to you and yours for all the wonderment that this time of year can bring. And may your holiday season be filled with the greatest gifts of time and gratitude!
In service and thankfulness,
Nanette

THE HIRED POWER DIFFERENCE!
Join us in Congratulating Laura Crossett! Laura recently received her CADC-II and has been promoted to Client Services Case Manager
For almost five years Laura has been the face and voice of the Hired Power monitoring program. Her passion for helping individuals navigate the challenges of early recovery is apparent in the sincerity and professional manner in which she helps clients and families. Trained as a Certified Recovery Specialist through the International Recovery Institute and having advanced with her CADC-II, Laura has shared her desire to have more client interaction than what is available in the role of monitoring. With her skillset and as an integral member of the Hired Power team it was easy to recognize that a natural advancement for Laura would be in the role of case managing, supporting Personal Recovery Assistants on assignment as well as continuing her support of the monitoring program. As referents and colleagues we believe you will all very much appreciate the professionalism and support that she brings to each case she supports. Please share with us in congratulating Laura today. How Can SAD Affect Your Recovery And What To Do About It?
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a change in mood or mental state caused by a change in seasons. The most common form of SAD is experiencing depression as winter approaches, but some people experience depression in the summer and people with bipolar disorder sometimes experience manic episodes when the weather turns hot. Although SAD is often described as the winter blues, it’s important not to dismiss the symptoms, especially if you are recovering from a substance use disorder.

Is Dreaming About Relapse A Bad Sign In Recovery?
Dreaming of relapse is a common part of recovery from addiction. In a typically relapse dream, you might find yourself in a situation in which you might commonly use drugs or alcohol, have a drink or use drugs, immediately feel remorse or disbelief, then wake up and feel relieved when you discover it was only a dream. Many people are understandably worried about relapse dreams. These dreams are often stressful in themselves but you may also wonder what they mean. Is a relapse dream a premonition of relapse? Does it mean that deep down you really want to drink or use drugs again? Does it mean your recovery is on the wrong track?

"Giving Thanks Can Make You Happier"
Source: Harvard Health Publishing Medical School "In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships."
|
|
..."The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness (depending on the context). In some ways gratitude encompasses all of these meanings. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power."
