Monthly news & updates from Mariners Inn June 2020 A note from David Sampson, our CEO: What's Going On? Some of us remember those famous words as they were written and sang by Marvin Gaye live in 1971; 49 years ago. The basic tenets of the song were trying to send a message about political policies and police brutality. In my mind, there is no more appropriate tune to reflect our current environment because I too am wondering; what’s going on? I have the distinct honor and privilege to serve an organization that is cognizant of current events and promotes the dignity and respect of every single person that we help to prepare to save their lives by successfully battling the disease of addiction. We are staunchly aware that certain events can trigger the types of environmental trauma that led to an exacerbated active addiction among the people that we serve. It is our duty to openly and honestly explore discussions surrounding the type of trauma that has impacted this entire nation; maybe even the world. In doing so, we help the people we serve to develop coping skills necessary to prevent relapse and more importantly, to develop those talents (some hidden) to lend a voice or action to causes that promote peace, dignity and well-being.  Today June 1, 2020 was one of those moments where we listened and learned how today’s current environment has impacted them.  Continued here... GIVE TODAY A message of hope Keith lost his home after a knee injury left him unable to work. He was homeless for three years as a result.  Today, Keith is in Mariners Inn’s Extended Residency Program, on the path to independent living, and he was kind enough to share a message of #hope for anyone going through a tough time. JANUARY 2020 Bryant Bennett  MARCH 2020 Stefanie Alston FEBRUARY 2020 Ashley Volkman MANAGER OF THE QUARTER Lang Carter A note from our COO on COVID-19 The COVID-19 has changed how we provide services to the men in our programs but we have made adjustments to continue to meet their needs and keep them, and the staff, safe. All of the men and staff have been tested for the virus and all that were sick were quarantined away from our main building.  We have implemented additional cleaning and sanitizing of the building and had the entire sleeping area sanitized by a professional company.  We are still conducting NA/AA meetings and didactics remotely and counselors are providing therapy by telephone or in person.  Recovery is still a priority in this changing environment but we will continue to keep clients' needs first while continuing to communicate about the virus, providing PPE for clients and staff, and sanitizing and cleaning.  Even though it may not always feel like it - we will make it through this pandemic together! -Carina Jackson, Chief Operations Officer Missed our CEO's letter regarding COVID-19? Review here.
