As we’ve been watching the world react and respond to the cries for change that have echoed the last few weeks, I’ve been reflecting on our responsibilities, our voices, and our actions, especially as those things relate to change. If there’s one thing that people in recovery know for certain, it’s that we have to take action and make change in order to recover.
I want to remind you today that our responsibility can be as simple as being the best recovering people that we can be; because if we practice the spiritual principles of recovery - honesty, integrity, humility, brotherly love, and service, among others - the world will change. I have learned that the world is not going to be changed by my opinions, but by my example. It’s not what I say, but what I do that is important – a fundamental principle of recovery.
Recovering people are already doing what the world needs to do to heal: Acknowledging the problem and living the solution. Keep going. Your purpose, your mission, and your truth matters – all of our lives depend on it.
I would be remiss if I did not say thank you to our alumni and family members who continue to show up for the newcomer in every possible way. Your care and concern for those who are just beginning this journey and your efforts to make connections are invaluable. When you commit to extending your hand to those who are struggling and isolated, your light is shining on their dark path.
I cherish every text message, phone call, email, and letter you have written, and have found your words to be very healing during this time. You inspire me and my team to continue to spread the message that: Treatment works. We do recover. There is hope.
I see you, I hear you, I am with you. And not just me, but all my colleagues at Caron Treatment Centers. We want you to know that we are going through this with you. We miss you all very much, and we felt compelled today to remind you that you are important to us and more importantly, we are here for you.
Be well,
