[ More Information ] – [ Download Brochure ] Be Aware of Loperamide Misuse Among Your Patients Loperamide (also sold under the brand name Imodium®) is a prescription and over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. While it’s reportedly safe and effective when used as directed, recent data suggest some people are misusing loperamide. According to research reports, individuals most at risk for misusing loperamide are those experiencing opioid withdrawal and seeking a way to self-medicate or to achieve a euphoric high. By taking very high doses, individuals put themselves at risk for severe or fatal cardiac events. If you suspect that your client may be misusing loperamide, ask them if they are taking higher doses of loperamide than directed and if they are aware of the severe cardiac risks associated with doing so. Encourage them to seek the appropriate treatment. To prevent misuse, learn the right questions to ask and how to educate your clients.
