| Resilient Families: Communication Cultivates Adaptability Within Family Systems |

Description: Recovery for families involves positive stress management, coping with change, and the availability of support. We will examine how learning to cope with manageable stress is critical to developing resilience. Communication and community collaboration will be highlighted as essential to family members building skills, creating biological resistance to adversity, and experiencing resilient outcomes. Communication performances of bonding, bridging, and linking will be detailed as critical to family members’ cultivation of stability, finding a rhythm in family life with confidence to manage change. Throughout the webinar, participants will be asked to build upon ideas for family-practitioner-community collaboration to enhance resilience among families.
Presenter: Karyl Elizabeth Sabbath, PhD, LAC, LIDC, ICCS
Karyl Elizabeth Sabbath, PhD, LAC, LIDC, ICCS, holds a Doctorate degree in Interpersonal Communication from Ohio University. She taught for 21 years at Otterbein University, was promoted to Professor in 2002, and retired with emeritus status in 2010. Sabbath served as an outpatient and inpatient counselor for seven years, was a Trainer of Trainers for the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board, and worked as an organizational consultant. Presently, she teaches for Colorado State University Communication Studies Department. Her 1999 chapter in Communication in Recovery: Perspectives on Twelve-Step Groups examines communication styles of adult children of alcoholics.

| Social Media and Ethical Dilemmas for Behavioral Health Clinicians |

Description: “It’s not the truck you see that runs you over.” Social media, like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, didn't yet exist when many of us were in graduate school, and their impact on our communication with each other - and with our clients - could hardly be anticipated. In this session, we will explore this emerging challenge by discussing the Behavioral Health Ethical codes that apply to virtual interactions and share common challenges and recommended best practices.
Presenter: Mike Bricker, MS, NCAC II, CADC II, LPC
Mike Bricker, MS, NCAC II, CADC II, LPC, is a behavioral health clinician for Strong Integrated BH in Eugene, OR, where he specializes in providing trauma-responsive care to participants in treatment for SUDs, complex trauma, and chronic pain. Bricker is also a consultant on “dual recovery” from substance use and mental disorders through the STEMSS Institute and specializes in blending research-based treatment with other Wisdom Traditions. He has educated and trained counselors in Alaska, the Navajo Nation, and Oregon. Bricker is a seasoned trainer who presents regularly at national conferences and is a NAADAC Approved Education Provider. He has been a clinician, consultant, and teacher for over 35 years.
