O ne of the biggest frustrations for families of an addict who is killing themselves with drugs is that there is no way to force them into treatment. While this is true in almost all states, many states are considering doing what Kentucky already put in place. A few states already have with Ohio enacting Casey’s Law and Indiana enacting a similar bill called the Jennifer Act.
Both laws were named after addicts who died before getting the treatment they needed.
Casey’s Law in Kentucky gives a concerned family member the ability to take an addict to court to try and have them court ordered to treatment.
The family will then have to prove that the addict meets the criteria to be court ordered to treatment. This can also open the door to low or no cost treatment, however, this is not always the case.

With the Jennifer Act, however, treatment has to be already set up and ready, including the cost.
If you are in a position where this may be necessary and are living in one of the states listed above, there are websites you can read about these laws.

What do you think?
Should families be able to get legal authorization to put a loved one in treatment or do you think this violates a person’s rights? Please leave a comment and join the discussion.
