Hi , We answer addiction questions every day at the Life Process Program, and can you guess our most frequently asked question?
They go in this order: - “I was addicted to drugs and alcohol; will I pass my addiction on to my children?”
- “My parents were addicted to drugs and alcohol; will I inherit these addictions?
In many cases, current thinking classifies drug and alcohol problems exactly as permanent biological and brain malfunctions that are genetically transferred to future generations. We don’t believe that.
At the Life Process Program, we simply see people with drug and alcohol problems as human beings coping as best they can with their circumstances.
Sometimes their coping mechanisms, while understandable, lead them in problematic directions. And sometimes children will mimic similar patterns in their own lives— but not due to biological inheritance. And in case that all sounds too earnest, here is a more detailed response to the question of addiction and genetic predisposition: https://lifeprocessprogram.com/alcohol-addiction/faqs/inherit-addiction/ Check it out, and please leave a comment at the space on the bottom of the blog— we want to hear from you!
Talk soon,
