October 29, 2019 NAADAC Free Webinars in November Medication Assisted Recovery in Complex Situations Wednesday, November 6, 2019 @ 3-4:30pm ET (2 CT/1 MT/12 PT) Description: This webinar will stress the importance of doctor and counselor interactions when working with clients experiencing complex situations, including mental health diagnosis, pregnancy, pain management issues and other more complex diagnoses. We will discuss these situations from both the physician's point of view and the counselor's point of view, and the communication that is most effective among treatment team members. In these complex cases, communication regarding the treatment team is essential for the optimal situation for the client. Presenters: Don Hall, LCDC, and Michael Weaver, MD Don Hall, LCDC, is a person in long term recovery, which to him means that he has not had a needle in his arm for recreational purposes for over 25 years. Since the initiation of his recovery, he became an LCDC in 1993 and has spent most of career working with substance-using, homeless, indigent, criminal justice, and mental health individuals. He serves on the Advisory Committee of the School of Human Services of Houston Community College. He is involved with the Houston-Harris County Office of Drug Control Policy.  Michael Weaver, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Center for Neurobehavioral Research on Addictions at The University of Texas Health Science Center McGovern Medical School at Houston. He is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He has extensive experience teaching about addiction to medical students, residents, and community professionals at all levels. Parents with PTSD: How Addiction Can Re-traumatize Families Wednesday, November 20, 2019 @ 3-4:00pm ET (2 CT/1 MT/12 PT) Description: It is well documented that addiction can have significant collateral impacts on parents, extended family, partners and friends. But what happens when these care-givers and supports also have their own Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) history? Living with, loving, and supporting a person with addiction can become personal: triggering parents, partners, and families to relive their own trauma history. This presentation will discuss how ACES can impact the family system, and will address specific support/treatment strategies using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness. Also addressed will be the CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, a body of groundbreaking research that looked at how childhood trauma affects long-term health. Presenter: Sean Swaby, MA Sean Swaby, MA, is a Family Counsellor with Alberta Health Services (Provincial Government-funded treatment) – Youth Residential Treatment Programs – Addiction and Forensic Mental Health. Swaby has worked for Alberta Health Services since 2005 and has over 25 years of experience working with youth and families in various recovery settings. He has a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, is a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and is an Internationally Certified Clinical Addiction Counsellor with the Canadian Addiction Counselling Certification Federation.
