Jerry A. Jenkins, MEd, MAC, is the Chair of the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCC AP), and the Chief Executive Officer of Anchorage Community Mental Health Services since 2003, adding Fairbanks Community Mental Health Services in 2013. He is in his third year as the President of the Alaska Behavioral Health Association. Anchorage/Fairbanks Community Mental Health Services provides behavioral health services across the span of life from ages 2 to 100. As an addiction treatment professional, Jenkins has over 34 years of experience in treating substance use disorders and mental illness. He has worked in and managed community based, outpatient, halfway and residential treatment services. He is an advocate for safe, affordable and accommodating housing for consumers as well as recovery as the expectation for behavioral health care with particular emphasis on being trauma informed.
Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, BSW, NCAC II, CDC III, SAP, is the Executive Director of NAADAC. She previously served as the Project Director of Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center, the Program Director for Volunteers of America Western Washington, serving homeless populations and the co-occurrence of poverty and substance abuse issues, and the administrator of multi-county, publicly-funded alcohol/drug prevention/ intervention/treatment centers. Moreno Tuohy has been a state, national, and international trainer for over 25 years on a variety of topics and has written many addiction-specific curriculums. Prior to joining NAADAC, she served in many roles on the NAADAC Board of Directors, including as President. Moreno Tuohy’s book, Rein in Your Brain: From Impulsivity to Thoughtful Living in Recovery was released in May 2014 (Hazelden Publishers). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and advanced studies in Social Work and Public Administration. |

| Using NADA Ear Acupuncture Protocol in Addiction Treatment |

Description: This presentation will start with the history of NADA, including how it was discovered and developed and some of the research that has been done over the past 50 years to determine safety and effectiveness. A description of the points used and a discussion of the western and eastern medicine philosophy behind the points will follow. There will be a discussion of how it is being used in programs around the country and how it can be used to help with opiate withdrawal, with and without MAT, and with co-occurring disorders to help calm anxiety and improve sleep. It will finish with a description of training and how people can assess trainings and depending on their state laws, who can do this.
Presenter: Libby Stuyt, MD
Libby Stuyt, MD, is the Medical Director for the Circle Program at the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo, Colorado, a 90-day inpatient treatment program funded by the state of Colorado for persons with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder who have failed other levels of treatment. A board-certified Addiction Psychiatrist, Stuyt has been working in the field of addiction psychiatry since 1990. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association certified her as an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist in December 2000 and a Registered Trainer in 2008. She has utilized the NADA protocol since 2000 in her program, initially to help patients withdraw from nicotine, but has found it to also be helpful for many symptoms experienced by those with mental illness.

| Overlapping Issues: Domestic & Sexual Violence, Mental Health, Trauma & Substance Use |

Description: Many persons with substance use disorders have multiple vulnerabilities. Professionals must know the correlations, implications, and ramifications of these intersections. Clients have often experienced traumas, including domestic violence or sexual assault. Survivors of these crimes also experience trauma reactions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Some have pre-existing conditions, while others develop them as a result of the traumas. Many have turned to addictive substances to cope with ongoing abuse or traumatic memories of prior abuses. Best practices require competency to address substance use disorders and these vulnerabilities. This session will discuss overlapping concerns and hope to address them in partnership with victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Presenter: Julie Owens, Certified Domestic Violence Counselor
Julie Owens, Certified Domestic Violence Counselor, has worked extensively with persons with multiple vulnerabilities, including pregnant and mothering women with substance abuse disorders, psychiatric patients, persons with autism and trauma survivors. Since 1990 she has worked solely in domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. At the National Center for PTSD, Owens co-developed and provided the first trauma therapy for formerly battered women. She later spent three years serving victims with substance use and psychiatric disorders, creating a model response. Owens trains and consults nationally and internationally and serves as an expert witness. Her clients include the U.S. Department of State, the DOJ Office for Victims of Crime, the National Human Trafficking Training & Technical Assistance Center and Bank of America.

| Schema Therapy: Beliefs Drive Behavior |

Description: Schema theory, developed by Jeffrey Young, will be presented including the ideas around how we form behavior patterns. Also covered will be how beliefs are formed and how they can be formed around inaccurate or skewed information, and thus produce unhealthy or ill-informed behaviors. We will cover the 18 schemas, including their definitions and etiologies. We will discuss ways to challenge beliefs and how to explain schemas to clients, as well as temper clinician and client expectations for what progress looks like.
Presenter: Jennifer Mathews, LPC-S, NCC, CDWF, MAC, SAP
Jennifer Mathews, LPC-S, NCC, CDWF, MAC, SAP, is the Clinical Director at Nova Recovery Center, outside Austin, TX, and owner of her private practice office in San Marcos, TX. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor- Supervisor and has been in the field for 11 years. She is trained in EMDR and is a certified Daring Way and Rising Strong group facilitator. She holds a MAC and SAP certification and has appeared on A&E Intervention. Her specialties are trauma and shame work, family of origin and belief system work.
