World Drug Report 2018: Opioid Crisis, Prescription Drug Abuse Expands; Cocaine and Opium Hit Record Highs
UNODC (06/26) - The non-medical use of prescription drugs is becoming a major threat to public health and law enforcement worldwide with opioids causing the most harm and accounting for 76 per cent of deaths where drug use disorders were implicated, according to the latest World Drug Report, released today by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Read more

FDA Approves First Drug Comprised of an Active Ingredient Derived from Marijuana to Treat Rare, Severe Forms of Epilepsy
FDA (06/25) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, in patients two years of age and older. This is the first FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from marijuana. It is also the first FDA approval of a drug for the treatment of patients with Dravet syndrome. Read more

House Approves Bill Expanding Treatment for Opioid Abuse
U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT (06/22) - The House has overwhelmingly approved legislation designed to give health care providers more tools to stem an opioid crisis that is killing more than 115 people in the United States daily. The legislation passed Friday by a vote of 396-14. It incorporates dozens of opioid-related bills that lawmakers have made a campaign-season priority. Read more

Expanding Primary Care Buprenorphine Treatment Could Curb Opioid Overdose Crisis

Native American Teens at Higher Risk for Substance Abuse
MEDICAL XPRESS (06/23) - Native American teens are at greater risk of alcohol and drug abuse than other American teens, a new study finds. Still, "we do not want these data to be used to stigmatize American Indian kids," said study author Randall Swaim, director of Colorado State University's Tri-Ethnic Center for Prevention Research. Read more

Newly Developed Therapeutic Shown to Combat Drug Addiction
MEDICAL XPRESS (06/29) – A new therapeutic may help reverse chemical imbalances made to the brain by habitual drug use and could one day help recovering drug addicts avoid future drug use. Researchers from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston developed and tested a treatment on rats and found it effective in reducing the animals' cravings. Their findings are in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Read more

Tech Companies Deflect Blame for Opioid Crisis Ahead of FDA Summit
WIRED (06/27) - Representatives from Facebook, Google, Twitter, and roughly a dozen other tech companies will gather with academics, lobbyists, and government officials Wednesday for a summit hosted by the Food and Drug Administration. The goal of the summit, according to the FDA, is to get tech leaders to "discuss ways to collaboratively take stronger action" against the spread of illicit opioids online. But the gathering was mired in controversy before it even began, as the tech and pharmaceutical industries wrestled over the question of who bears more responsibility for a crisis that kills more than 115 Americans every day. Read more

Overdose Risk Quintuples with Opioid and Benzodiazepine Use
MEDICAL XPRESS (06/22) - In the first 90 days of concurrent opioid and benzodiazepine use, the risk of opioid-related overdose increases five-fold compared to opioid-only use among Medicare recipients, according to a new study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, published today in JAMA Network Open. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends against concurrent use of opioids and benzodiazepines, but nearly a quarter of Medicare recipients who are prescribed opioids also fill prescriptions for benzodiazepines. Both drugs have sedative effects. Read more
