This is especially true during the holiday season, where those with SUD experience an increased presence of triggers. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)estimates that 40,056 veterans are homeless on any given night. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a recent Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) report states that about 70% of homeless veterans also experience a substance use disorder. SAMHSA developed a short blog post to get service providers to start thinking about how to manage the holiday season’s challenges, including triggers of trauma for homeless service providers and the people they serve.
