Reminder: National Substance Abuse Prevention Month Donations

PREVENTION * RECOVERY * WELLNESS
OCTOBER IS
National Substance Abuse Prevention Month
This October marks the second annual National Substance Abuse Prevention Month – an observance to highlight the vital role of substance abuse prevention in both individual and community health and to remember those who have lost their lives to substance abuse.  The Office of National Drug Control Policy is highlighting National Substance Abuse Prevention Month and encourages prevention efforts this month and all year long to ensure the health of teens and young adults.
October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month

As you know over the years the City of Angels has assisted the many families whose loved ones suffered from addiction. The team of coaches and volunteers work hard day after day to provide the useful and necessary information and training to help comfort those families, the addicted, recoverees, and friends with the tools and advice to face their addiction, and never is a fee charged to them or their families.

All our funds come from people like you who support our non-profit organization.
In October during National Substance Abuse Prevention Month (NSAPM), we are raising awareness of the ongoing pressing problem of substance abuse that continues to destroy people and families. We provide the necessary programs through Recovery Coaches, training, and assistance in aftercare.

We are asking friends of the City of Angels to make a modest monthly donation of just $9.00 a month so we can continue to provide ongoing services and critical assistance in addressing substance abuse. Just $9.00 a month, which is a little more than $100.00 per year will make a big difference in the fight against substance abuse in a big way. There isn’t a better time than this October during NSAPM to commit to helping protect your family, your community, and those in active addiction needing help.

Tears of confusion and helplessness overwhelm loved ones, and people you know. They need your help! The City of Angels has provided substance abuse services compassionately to our community and the surrounding areas for over 10 years. We need your support now to help others. COVID -19 has exasperated an already disastrous substance abuse public health crisis.

Forging Connection in Strange Times

It continues to be an odd and difficult time for many of us, and forging connection is more important than ever if we’re to get through it in a healthy way. Below are some resources that may help you get there:

Visit online and remote resources for addiction support during COVID
We’re fortunate that we live in a digital age with many ways to connect electronically. We offer an online support community, hosted by specially trained parent coach facilitators and clinicians. There is no cost to join and the meetings offer support for parents struggling with a child’s substance use amid this time of increased stress and isolation.

Learn about what to do when every conversation feels like an argument
Developing new tools and strategies for more effective communication has been shown to be one of the most powerful things you can do to improve your relationship with your child. Read about the ways to parent away from substances like drugs and alcohol and toward a better connection with your child.

Understand what “active listening” really means
Active listening is all about OARS: Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections and Summaries. Employing these simple tactics can open the lines of communication and strengthen your relationship with your child — or, really, anyone you want to forge a connection with.

Read former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s new book, "Together"
When Vivek Murthy went on a listening tour of America to learn more about the opioid epidemic and other issues, he didn’t expect how many Americans would be struggling with loneliness. As he says, “Loneliness is the subjective feeling that you’re lacking the social connections you need. It can feel like being stranded, abandoned, or cut off from the people with whom you belong—even if you’re surrounded by other people. What’s missing when you’re lonely is the feeling of closeness, trust, and the affection of genuine friends, loved ones, and community.”

Watch Mobilize Recovery conference’s family roundtable discussion
Last month, families sat down and discussed proven ways to stay connected to your child struggling with substance use, including learning CRAFT skills and loving your child. The full discussion is available for free on YouTube.

Help People Find Their Spiritual Family

Dear Joseph,
Now more than ever, we know the hardship people are facing every day. But for some, these bumps in the road can be catastrophic -- especially for those experiencing homelessness.

For Steve, his life spiralled out of control after spending six months in prison. He separated from his wife and was evicted from his home. That's when he sought refuge at Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission.

“I was angry when I first got to the Mission. After being at Sunday Breakfast for a couple of days, it felt like I was a part of a family,” Steve remembers. “I had been living on the street for a year and wanted a fresh start. I am happier now.”

By donating only $24.50, you can provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a night of shelter for a guest.
