By Rae Green, JD, MA, LPC, CAADC, Wednesday, September 9, 2020 8:36 AM

Dear Rae: Should we delay treatment for our son? Since March, our 21-year old son has been showing signs of alcohol and marijuana addiction. He is always sneaking off in our back yard, and there have been many times when he has been staggeringly drunk or high. I guess we are seeing it now that […]

Recovery Walks! 2020- How to participate!

Recovery Walks! 2020 is almost here, and we are getting lots of questions, from people eager to get involved, but not sure how to do that virtually. So, we thought we’d answer them here:

Q: How can I participate in Recovery Walks! 2020?

A: Join us this Saturday online as we stream live from our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Recoverywalks
We’ll be live from 9:30 – 10:30 am with special guests, team highlights, Recovery Idol performances and more.

Then, at 10:30, we invite everyone to lace up their sneakers and walk 1.5 miles, safely and socially distancedin your own community. Take pictures or videos and share it online – and add #RecoveryWalks2020 and if you’re in the Honor Guard (10 years of recovery or more) add #RWHonorGuard

Q: How will I know the winning fundraising team?

A: We’ll track that competition until 9:00 am Saturday, September 12th and will announce the winning team during the Livestream.

Q: How can I see pictures of my team walking?

A: We’ll be looking through those hashtagged photos for pictures to share on our Facebook page, so keep checking back throughout the morning. If you prefer, you can also email photos or videos to awashington@councilsepa.org

You can also look through the hashtagged photos throughout the day and enjoy the pictures of our incredible recovery community walking, together in spirit, and safe in our own communities.

Q: Can I still make a donation?

A: YES! You can still make a gift to ensure Recovery is possible by visiting www.recoverywalks.org or by clicking here

Addiction was my disease. I am recovered.

Addiction was my disease. I am recovered. I am living.

For runners, there are six major marathons: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. But in 2019, I chose to run my first marathon in an even more important city to me, the same city where I began my recovery journey: Baltimore, MD. On April 9, 2017, my brother opened his Charm City home to me, six days after I took my last drink.

My introduction to drinking was like many others'. I started late in high school and had a “normal” college drinking experience. After school, I began working, but my job made me miserable. My life began to center around alcohol. Eventually, I quit my job and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dream of working in casting. I bartended to pay the bills and my drinking turned into a full-fledged addiction. To support it, I depleted my 401k. Struggling and broke, my family encouraged me to get help.

After an inpatient treatment program, I lived in a sober house for nine months. I graduated from this program not thinking I had a problem. I was only depressed. I found solace in a bottle. You can be addicted to a substance without being an “addict,” right? I was normal.
