Can You Drink Your Way Sober?
March 1, 2020 - “I went to my first meeting, cried all the way through it, then went out and proceeded to get massively wasted.” But Schick Shadel’s treatment involves some strategies experts consider fringe, even borderline unethical. The center administers high doses of alcohol combined with a nausea-inducing drug or mild electric shocks... @HuffPost
Keeping Life Alive WATCH
San Francisco Resurrects Plan to Open Supervised Injection Sites WATCH
March 4, 2020 - The centers allow people to use their own drugs under the watch of staff trained to administer life-saving medication in the case of a potentially deadly overdose. “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.” — Marie Curie
‘Sobriety’s not boring’
March 2, 2020 - Is sobriety ready for a rebrand? Drinking was a band-aid for that anxiety. Since she stopped using alcohol, she’s learned -- with the help of a therapist -- to manage her feelings without it. “The best part of it, although it is hard sometimes, is just feeling every emotion, and having to cope with that,” Foos said. @ADN
A Truly Radical Idea to Address Drug Addiction Takes Hold in Mia Donovan’s Gripping “Dope is Death” - March 6, 2020 - This remarkable tale of how the Black Panthers and Young Lords solved the drug crisis in their community will put you on pins and needles.
Opioid Epidemic Might Be Much Worse Than We Thought
FEB. 27, 2020 - “you would think [coroners] would not be able to identify opioid involvement in a death as well as a medical doctor trained in it would.” That inference seems to be held up by data: The states that had a lot of unclassified drug-overdose deaths... @TheAtlantic
We Are Miracles, Too!
Laura McKowen on Addiction, Recovery and We Are the Luckiest - MARCH 2, 2020 - There was a point, pretty early on, when I was laying with my daughter one night. She was asleep, and I had been crying. I felt a shift because as difficult as things were emotionally then, I was okay. I was safe. My daughter was safe. @WestWord

Fox 59 News reports that, after the person is sent to the hospital to treat the overdose, “officers will fill out a form to determine if there is probable cause to file charges.” @CH27
Opinion: Jailing individuals for drug addiction is immoral
March 3, 2020 - President Richard Nixon coined the phrase in 1971, which adjudicated drug abuse as “public enemy number one.” A 1973 executive order called the Controlled Substance Act created the Drug Enforcement Agency, which made wide-scale arrests for using and distributing narcotics. @DailyIowan

Who Decides? WATCH

The Way Back...Time Out says ** stars - April 24 2020 - But the movie misfires when it comes to pacing, revealing the source of Jack’s suffering too late, rushing through his awakening and squandering our goodwill in the process. Far from the formulaic slam dunk it could have been, ‘The Way Back’ never rebounds from its gradual emotional decline. @TimeOut
