Spread Christmas Cheer for $2.25

Dear Joseph,

I love seeing the excitement on my boys' faces when they open their Christmas gifts. It is infectious, and I can't help but be excited too! But oftentimes, my mind wanders to the men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia who haven't felt the joy of the holiday season in a very long time. Homelessness is a lonely condition that leaves thousands feeling rejected and unloved.
For our guest, Gerard, struggling to overcome addiction, he fell into hopelessness and was seeking a place of refuge. Gerard came to the Mission in search of a meal and was desperate to find hope. After a short stay in the emergency shelter at the Mission, Gerard began growing in his walk with God and learning the skills he needed to thrive. This is the greatest gift you can give this Christmas season.
This Christmas, you can ensure that homeless men like Gerard have a warm place to stay and a hope for a better tomorrow. A special Christmas meal at the Mission only costs $2.25 per guest. In addition to a hot meal, your gift provides clothing, toiletries, and a bed for guests to sleep in at night. This is also a wonderful opportunity for people like Gerard to hear the message of God's love.
Please make room in your heart for the lonely and discouraged this Christmas and make a donation for Christmas meals today

Yours in Christ's Service,
Jeremy Montgomery

The government-imposed austerity reforms following the economic crisis of 2010 in Greece severely impacted social programs for addiction counseling and mental health services. In the years since this dramatic reduction in programs, the new government has launched several initiatives to rebuild social and humanitarian support programs. Our delegation will visit new centers and meet with our counterparts as we discuss the progress and advances in addressing addiction and mental health in Greece.
Connect with addiction and mental health professionals in Greece to discuss:
  • Epidemiology of mental health and substance use disorders in Greece;
  • Assessment, intervention, referral, and treatment and care options;
  • Post-austerity reform programs to address the scarcity of service providers and access to treatment;
  • Role of primary care and community-based services in the identification and treatment of addiction for patients and affected family members;
  • Ongoing quality of life and community rehabilitation programming; and
  • International refugee programs and treatment for post-conflict trauma disorders.

Managing the Holidays with My Son in Recovery

How We Manage the Holidays Now That Our Journey Has Led to Recovery

by Alecia Gordon, parent & advocate
holiday lights
I am very thankful and blessed this holiday season to be sharing it with my son as he continues his journey in recovery. He has been in recovery for three and a half years now and each year he is improving and continuing to choose a sober life. I am proud of the man and the father he has become. I am also proud of the mother I have become.

This has been a gut-wrenching, agonizing journey for 12 years. In the beginning, I would not have believed I would be writing about my son’s recovery and how the holiday season is more joyful now than ever. We are grateful for recovery.

In our journey with addiction, I initially thought if I loved my son enough, and if he loved our family enough, he could change his ways. It took a lot of education and time for all of us to learn and understand that he has a disease and that he needed a lot of help to learn to manage his disease. I had to learn that it was out of my control and it would be up to him to do whatever it took to live a life in recovery.

The only control I had was to allow him to live his life whether he continued to use drugs or not. I loved him unconditionally, but had to set boundaries for myself and our family. It was hard! It took a lot of practice and patience and faith that God would help him find his way. We all made mistakes along the way, but always did our best to learn from them.

Our son tried several options for professional treatment. Some court-ordered, some voluntary. He tried in-patient treatment, NA groups, medically assisted outpatient treatment, and sponsors. The last treatment prior to his sustained recovery was six months of inpatient treatment and then six months at a sober living home with intensive outpatient treatment. I feel that each treatment session taught him something, gave him tools, helped him get stronger, helped him with self-esteem and helped him to gain confidence in his ability to manage his disease.
