Hey Friends.
It’s hard to believe my 21 year old daughter, Chianne moved into her own apartment this week. And that got me thinking about what independence really means. I concluded that our ability to be independent is directly related to having certainty about the people and things we can depend on. I hope you take 3 minutes of your time to check out my new video titled, “The Myth of Independence”.

Nick Di Bona
Dear Joseph,

All-Star Tasting is right around the corner, and we’re counting on your support! On Wednesday, May 16th, we will team up with families, friends, athletes and chefs to rally around our mission and raise critical funds to ensure parents struggling with a loved one’s substance use find the help and support they need.

One of this year’s All-Star chefs and former Food Network’s “CHOPPED” Champion, Chef Nick Di Bona of Bona Bona Ice Cream, understands and appreciates our value and impact from a very personal perspective.

After the loss of his youngest brother to addiction, Nick is relentlessly determined to bring awareness to the need for family support services around substance use. Nick is a tremendous champion for the Partnership, participating not only in our All-Star Tasting, but also sharing our resources with his growing base of customers. His Bona Bona station at the All-Star Tasting will showcase his very own small-batch “B-Dough” ice cream, named in honor of his charismatic little brother.

Nick’s ice cream is among the many exquisite dishes you’ll enjoy, each prepared by a variety of outstanding New York City chefs and restaurants, as well as the opportunity to bid on exceptional items and experiences throughout the night. You won’t want to miss the athlete cook-off challenge featuring fan favorites Ron Harper, Aurelien Collin and Jonathan Stewart, to name a few.

How to Make a Discharge Plan When Your Child Leaves Addiction Treatment

by Connie Motley, M.Ed, LPC-S, Executive Clinical Director of Origins South Padre
Mom and Son Hugging
While residential treatment provides a natural “safe zone” where people seeking sobriety can focus on battling the immediate crisis of addiction, those of us working as treatment providers know that the real work of recovery begins when residential or formal treatment ends. The combination of medical detox, followed by rigorous counseling and family work while in treatment, are only the first steps to a life of freedom from a substance use disorder. So, what should families expect when their loved one prepares to leave treatment and head back home?

What is Discharge Planning?

Discharge planning is a critical component of a treatment program which helps patients and their families prepare to navigate the ups and downs of a sober life. A detailed and organized discharge plan can provide both stability for the person entering recovery and peace of mind for their families. We've outlined the key components of a discharge plan as well as what questions to ask as your loved one engages in treatment.
