The Addict’s Mom Race Car
Press Release Prepared by Sherry Schlenke
March 2017
TAM is off to the races! As a child, TAM member Sherry McKnight spent hours watching her father speed around the track in his race car at historic Bowman Grey Stadium in Winston Salem, North Carolina. When Sherry learned that family friend Billy Gregg, an expert short track driver, needed a sponsor, she decided to contribute the fee. TAM founder, Barbara Theodosiou, gladly gave permission for Billy to display “The Addict’s Mom” logo on the hood of his sleek car!
Billy and his TAM car kicked off the racing season on Sunday, March 19 at Bowman Gray Stadium, which is the first NASCAR- sanctioned venue. Since 1949, drivers in their cars have been pursuing each other around the 1/4 mile asphalt flat oval short track at Bowman. Now, the TAM car will become part of the most popular sport in the country, at one of the most popular venues.
For every green flag to signal the start of the race, some 17,000 screaming fans are present. Drivers report that the crowd, who begin lining up for tickets 12 hours before the start of the race, is so enthusiastic and loud, that one cannot hear the announcements on the public address system!
With huge tires and wheels, the gleaming 2,000 pound machines are like rocket ships on wheels! The TAM car is no exception, with its huge carburetor and 360 horse power capable of passing the fastest competitors!
Throughout this summer, Billy will also drive the TAM car in races in Virginia, thus disseminating the TAM message even further!
Barbara Theodosiou is very thankful for the tremendous publicity and exposure that Sherry McKnight, who has been with TAM for 2 years, is providing to TAM. Under Barbara’s guidance, 85,000 TAM members have worked tirelessly, educating, informing, supporting, and advocating for families whose lives have been devastated by addiction.
As the head driver of “The Addict’s Mom,” Barbara recognizes that it takes a full pit crew of dedicated volunteer administrators and members to gain the attention of the public and educate them about the deadly drug epidemic that is racing across our nation, killing our children and destroying our families. TAM moms resemble the screaming race fans, who want their voices to be heard.
So, let us send a huge thank-you to Sherry McKnight and cheer for Billy and the TAM car as it reaches the winner’s circle!

The Hidden Link Between Autism and Addiction
THE ATLANTIC (03/02)...Until recently, researchers held that addiction among people with autism is rare, although there wasn’t much solid evidence for this view…A new study in Sweden, however, suggests that people with autism who have average or above-average intelligence quotients (IQs) are more than twice as likely to become addicted to alcohol or other drugs as their peers are. The risk is even higher for people who also have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study is the first to look at the general risk for addiction among people with autism. Read more

When Bipolar Disorder and Addiction Coexist it Requires Dual Diagnosis Treatment
YAHOO FINANCE (03/28) - It's estimated that as many as half of bipolar disorder sufferers also struggle with some form of addiction. The extreme mania and depression of bipolar disorder makes it easy to see why turning to drugs or alcohol is a natural choice; warding off the lows and enhancing the highs can be accomplished almost immediately by self-medicating. Read more

A Bayesian Observer Model of Drug Craving
JAMA PSYCHIATRY (02/15) - The reinforcement learning theory of drug addiction has been influential for decades... However, many empirical findings remain unaddressed. In particular, accumulating evidence suggests that DA, delivered by either addictive drugs or by pharmacological treatments, such as the nicotine replacement therapy, is not sufficient to reduce craving. Craving persists even after compulsive drug-taking behavior stops, suggesting that craving and drug-seeking behavior are 2 distinct processes, despite the fact that they are often homogenized in laboratory settings. Read more

A Better Way to Treat Addiction in Jail
THE MARSHALL PROJECT (03/01)...Because Rhode Island’s is a unified system — all the state’s prisons and county jails are located on a single campus — it is the only state where almost every opiate-addicted inmate, whether in prison or jail, has access to a range of medications to treat their drug addiction. “Rhode Island has really embraced the opiate epidemic as an opportunity to improve services and treatment,” says Dr. Jennifer Clarke, the medical director for the state corrections department. “Locking people up is not a treatment.” In fact, prison or jail can lead to greater harm: Forced abstinence during incarceration makes users’ tolerance go down and cravings go up. Read more

Louisiana's Compulsive Gambling Problem
THE FIX (03/01) - The state of Louisiana in 2016 found itself ranked #3 in the country for gambling addiction among adults... Understanding the breadth of gambling addiction in Louisiana is complex, to say the least. Janet Miller, the executive director of the Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling (LACG), said, “I think we have not seen in the clinical field the true numbers of gambling addicts yet. There is a lot more gambling going on that is a big problem, but it is easy to hide it. It’s not like alcoholism or drug addiction—someone can have a gambling problem and go undiagnosed for years. Read more
