🌊 Going to The Beach May Be Better For You Than You Realize.

Heard of Vitamin Sea? Well, it’s actually a very real thing.

According to clinical psychologist, Richard Shuster, PsyD, the color blue has a profound calming effect on people.

“Staring at the ocean actually changes our brain waves’ frequency and puts us into a mild meditative state,” he noted.

Read the rest of the benefits, here.

And enjoy this week's highlights!

1. Self-Care During the Holidays

We all know the holidays can get hectic, frustrating, and often times be a hotspot for relapse. This week, I smashed the myth that self-care requires you sit in a bathtub and read a book - self care actually involves a lot more than that.

Watch the video below, or here.
2. I'm An Atheist So Why Should I Pray?

This belief was a major conflict for me when I got sober. I grew up religious and eventually phased out into what I believed to be Atheism. My parents stopped going to church as often themselves, so I didn’t attend on my own.

So, how did James get past that? Read the full story, here.

3. Juice WRLD's Family Speaks Out About Addiction

Last weekend we heard of the tragic passing of up-and-coming 21-year-old rapper Juice WRLD. Earlier yesterday, his mother released a statement noting his struggle with prescription drug use.

5. The Business of Recovery

When I got sober, I went to a rehab, halfway house, and individual therapy sessions with my counselor. Each of these levels of care cost significant money to stay in. Altogether, I was paying a crazy amount of money for help with my addiction and I quickly became skeptical.

But now I work for them. Read more, here.

A Special Gift from the Lord-His Mansion Ministries December 2019 Newsletter

December 2019 Newsletter
Breanna O.
A Special Gift from the Lord

"I figured I wouldn't get in, that I was a hopeless cause." For Breanna, thoughts like these plagued her so much that she used food and fantasy to replace relationships with others, herself and God. Bre felt deep loneliness and pressure to seem like someone she wasn't for almost 30 years.
Much to her disbelief, she was accepted into the program and was able to begin her process of healing. "September 17th 2018, I stepped onto the hill into the hardest, scariest, best thing that would ever happen to me. God has restored what I thought impossible- a loving, grace-filled, meaningful relationship with Him! He has brought me back to life over the past year! He has re-awakened my love for His Word, for music, for people. He has given me opportunities to find my voice and express myself."
Learning to develop loving relationships gave Bre a freedom she had never known. Looking to others and the Lord instead of isolating has allowed her to no longer use food as comfort. She has restructured her faith around her personal experience with Christ instead of following someone else's ideal to gain approval.

I Ruined Every Tradition. 👹

Happy Friday everyone!

This time of year always leaves me reminiscent of past years. Spending time with family, partaking in traditions, and through the midst of it all ruining it with my addiction.

Today I find myself so grateful for what I have - and the new traditions I've been able to make. The last few years I've gone to a Christmas tree lighting with my favorite cup of hot chocolate to keep me warm.

What are some new traditions you've made in sobriety?

Let me know, and enjoy this weeks news from Sober Nation!
1. A Sense of Fun About it All

Whether you are new in your recovery or if you have substantial clean time under your belt, when the invites to social gatherings pop up in your inbox or your mailbox, the hairs on the back of your neck might stand up and feelings of anxiety and dread start paying rent in your brain. Yes, your friends will be there and it could be a blast… but how do I have fun without drinking or drugging?

This week smashed the myth and put together a plan to approach social gatherings. Watch the video, here.
2. Recovery Coaches Are Now in ERs.

In hospitals, waiting rooms are crowded and Emergency Rooms are typically filled with patients looking for help. However, what about those that are needing immediate attention for their addiction?

3. Shia LaBeouf Gets Up Close and Personal About His Alcoholism

After a massive comeback year, the road for Shia LaBeouf hasn’t been easy. Over the years, the actor has spoken out about his chaotic upbringing. However, now, the actor is putting the history of his life in screenplay format.

5. My Life with Bipolar

At the age of 24, I had lived nearly a decade of suffering from erratic mood swings, dark bouts of depression, and moments of mania marked by stimulant abuse. It was finally at that point, I ended up at a treatment center and a diagnosis of my disturbing behavior came to fruition. I had been living with Bipolar II.

What would other people think of me? What was my life going to look like next?

Coping with Recovery During the Holidays

Coping with Addiction & Recovery During the Holidays

by Laurie S., parent and advocate
snowflake
This is my daughter’s third year celebrating the holidays while in recovery. Six weeks prior to Thanksgiving 2017, she had left her third treatment center and was on the streets in Pennsylvania; five weeks before Thanksgiving she was back in Maryland and on medication-assisted treatment for opioids; and four weeks prior to the holiday she was living in a local sober-living house. Needless to say, for the past few years, how the holidays were going to unfold for our family was a complete unknown.

Thanksgiving in our house is a mandatory holiday. Family from all over the country converge on our house for a week filled with laughter, food, and a bit of family tension. We’re a blended family that is comprised of blood, steps, and friends. Our daughter’s addiction, and newly found recovery, was an element that added to the family tension.

There are four kids in total — my daughter with addiction is the youngest and all of the others live out of state. Looking back, this Thanksgiving was the first with everyone together since the full impact of addiction hit our family. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Do I ask everyone not to drink? What about those who partake in marijuana? My husband and I had lots of conversations between us but didn’t really involve the rest of the family. We did, however, ask our daughter what she wanted. Here’s what we collectively decided to do.
