This Week Is Mental Illness Awareness Week
|
Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. However, mental illness affects everyone directly or indirectly through family, friends or coworkers. Despite mental illnesses’ reach and prevalence, stigma and misunderstanding are also, unfortunately, widespread.
This year's Mental Illness Awareness Week, which takes place from October 1-7, 2017, is focusing on five specific mental health conditions, including dual diagnosis (also known as co-occurring disorders) - when someone experiences a mental illness and a substance use disorder simultaneously.
According to a 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 7.9 million people in the U.S. experience both a mental disorder and substance use disorder simultaneously.
