Today, the Actor, Daniel Baldwin, has made a compelling statement expressing his desire to see significant action being taken at federal level to have a National Emergency declared on America’s heroin epidemic. This measure would help to deliver crisis funding for the opening of badly needed recovery centers across the country.

Earlier this week, the Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, officially declared a State of Emergency in advance of winter storm Stella. This was in sharp contrast to another action taken earlier this month by the Governor of Maryland, Larry Hogan, who took steps to formally introduce a State of Emergency to combat the heroin and opioid crisis locally. Additionally, $50 million in funding over 5 years was dedicated to the initiative.
“How can you compare this to a snow storm? We’re going to lose more children in the United States between the ages of 15 and 25 than we lost in the entire Vietnam War,” expressed, Daniel Baldwin. “If this was cancer, heart disease or anything else we’d already have a National Emergency in place.”
“During the Ebola scare, $600 million dollars was instantly allocated - yet 60,000 people will die in America in 2017 due to the heroin disaster. If we don’t treat these kids now - we’ll lose an entire generation. Just how many children will die from overdoses in New Jersey this year compared to this week’s snow storm? I'm a baby boomer and the millennials will be known as the heroin generation if we don't do something significant now.”
Frank Greenagel, the Director of the Family Program at Soba College Recovery, where Daniel Baldwin is an alumnus, has also issued the followed comments. "Over the past 5 years or so, I admit I've been a harsh critic of Governor Christie. In fact, his office appointed me as a now former Chairperson of the New Jersey Task Force on Heroin and Other Opiates. I'd like to do my part to step up this call even further by seeking the appointment of a Drugs Tsar for the State of New Jersey. There’s no clean-cut person in charge and we need strong leadership. What's more, the $50 million budget announced in Maryland was tiny. I was horrified by the small figure. New Jersey has a population of almost 9 million people. Given my background and bird’s eye view, the budget situation is critical and I estimate that a $150 million per year fund is more in line with what’s actually required today to tackle the heroin epidemic in the area.”
"More and more, State of Emergency statements from the offices of Governors seems like window dressing from those seeking applause for very little. Heroin is a huge problem and professionals are also battling an extremely fractured system on State, County, insurance, pharmaceutical, and private industry levels. Activating a heroin epidemic emergency wouldn't be the same as when a major snow storm or hurricane strikes given the complex layers of bureaucracy involved. People are tired of empty promises and political trickery - it's high time we witnessed some real action."
