Healing With Words
Rapping About Addiction
Rappers such as New York legend DMX and Southern rap veteran Lil Wayne began to talk about their addiction problems. Lil Wayne was also one of the few rappers to talk publicly of the dangers of "zyrup", a mix of cough syrup and codeine that's very popular in Southern states like his native Louisiana, describing it as "death in the stomach".

Six Things I Learned During Two Years Without Alcohol
I can't believe no mind-altering substances have entered my body in two years! If you told me two years ago I would be sitting here writing this blog, I would have said, you're crazy. Some days the gratitude is almost too much to bear and I just can't believe I've been given this amazing second chance at life.

COMMENT OF THE WEEK
Love Again
This week, Beth Leipholtz told us about nine things she has gained in sobriety. Readers also shared an appreciation of a sober, better life:

i can completely concur with you on "love." when i got sober in a really nice rehab (kinda vacation spa, but they still knew what they were doing), i remember the first few days talking to the therapist and saying: "i think, i've lost the ability to love. i, i, don't care about anyone anymore." all said with a flat blunt effect and absolutely dead looking eyes. on my last day, i was expected to give a speech, and i remember saying to my fellow patients: "thanks, guys, you taught me how to love again. . ." I mean we bonded really tight, and i began to actually care about others. and that to me was a huge relief--to know i still had the ability to care about others.
