Caron Treatment Centers Cut Readmission with New Insurance Contracts

Last week, Caron and Independence Blue Cross released outcomes of their value-based agreement at the 2021 RxSummit, as detailed in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The data showed Caron had a 90-day readmission rate of 5.6% in 2019, the last full year for which data is available, which is 2x better than our nearest competitor and 5x better than the lowest performing center in our cohort.

What does a 5.6% 90-day readmission rate mean?

For families a 5.6% 90-day readmission rate means that most patients who discharge are engaged in the recovery process – or that, based on 2019 insurance data, that Caron’s patients have a 94.4% rate of recovery at 90-days post-treatment.
Specifically, from the data presented at the RxSummit, the 5.6% means that of the 71 Caron IBC patients in 2019, 5.6% were readmitted into some form of treatment/care for substance use disorder within 90 days of being discharged.

Because of the relationships with providers like IBC, and more recently Aetna and Highmark, we have been able to make the quality treatment we provide at Caron more accessible to individuals suffering with substance use disorder and treat more affected individuals and their families.

When you treat addiction as the chronic disease it is, by focusing on the individual needs of the patient mentally, physically and spiritually as well as the family and having the length of time you need to truly treat the individual – you get better outcomes for patients.
