Click — Learning in Addiction Recovery | The Fix

Click — Learning in Addiction Recovery | The Fix: Have you ever struggled to learn how to do something? I mean really struggled. It’s part of the nature of being human because, at our core, we are learning beings. For some people, algebra, geometry, and calculus fall into this category. For others, learning to interact with the opposite sex has been the challenge…or navigating group dynamics. Still others, figuring out how to cope with those damn emotions in useful ways has been the struggle. When we speak of recovery from an addiction, often the process looks and feels like struggle.

A Thousand Wasted Sundays | The Fix

A Thousand Wasted Sundays | The Fix: That perfect little bundle of human that was crying beyond my bedroom door got me questioning my drinking. Questioning my life. I had a baby to look after. I had to do better.

Learning to Make Peace with The Past

Last week I asked you what some of your goals were for this month and the following people responded: SarahMissyTerryLeoNathanTerranceCameron

How are each of you doing? What action steps have you taken to get there, and how can the group support you?

A theme I noticed this week on Sobriety Engine was forgiveness, humility, and making peace with our past. Setting attainable goals and learning to ask for help can be the beginning to an incredible healing process. For so long we've run on auto-pilot of thinking we "have it all" or "can do it on our own."

However, when we get sober we must learn to deconstruct this way of thinking. Accepting help is hard. But living in addiction is also hard. Which path are you choosing today?

Enjoy the rest of this week's wrap up!

🍎 Guest Q&A

Cole Chance is Sobriety Engine's resident spiritual guide.

However, before Cole became a jet-setter, yoga instructor, and spiritual coach, she battled addiction herself. In this Q&A, Cole tells explains her in-depth and emotional story of trauma, alcoholism, heroin addiction and how Yoga saved her life.

Listen to the conversation, here.

🔔 Recovery Coaching

In this week's recovery coaching call, the group helped Dustyn who is facing the wreckage of his past. Feeling shame, guilt, anger, and frustration, he's stuck in self-remorse and self-hatred from his past actions. How do we learn to love and forgive ourselves? The group helps Dustyn put together a step-by-step action plan to begin the healing process of making peace with the past and most importantly, ourselves.

Listen to the replay, here.

🕉️ Guided Meditation

In this week's guided meditation, we used Tara Brach's acronym R.A.I.N. to help self-sooth and address anxieties.

In this guided meditation, Cole helps us work through an uncomfortable emotion or sensation in the body that may be disturbing us or causing friction in our lives.

Summer During a Pandemic

Dear Joseph,

On sweltering summer days, we can always find a safe place to escape the heat. Unfortunately, many of our homeless friends in Philadelphia have no escape. Men and women experiencing homelessness spend long summer days navigating the city streets in search of a small patch of shade to rest without being told to leave. Many of your homeless neighbors struggle to find even a few moments of relief.
Now more than ever, life on the street is tough, especially during this current health crisis. As our homeless neighbors struggle to survive, please do not take a vacation from helping those who need it most. Your partnership is important as more and more homeless guests seek refuge and care at the Mission.
By providing shelter, nutritious meals, and case management for our homeless guests this summer through your donation you can also be an encouragement to men like Charles.
Charles came to the Mission a few months ago, and while seeking stability, he is actively working to mend broken relationships from his past. With the help of the Mission's Homeless Services Team, he is making progress towards getting a job and an apartment. Through the support of his church community, he is also starting to rebuild trust with those he cares about most. During this health crisis, the Mission has become a place of hope, home, and health for Charles. Today, Charles volunteers in the kitchen and sees firsthand how the food he helps prepare can change lives. You make it possible for Charles to offer encouragement and kindness to men in desperate need of a meal, shelter, stability, and God’s love.
“I want to do whatever it takes to encourage others and, when I encourage others, I am also encouraging myself.” Charles further explains, “Sometimes people just need some kind of kindness and support for them to stand back up.”

To continue serving the city’s homeless community, we need your help! With your support, you can help provide three hearty meals a day to those in need. The Mission remains the only provider of 3 meals a day, 365 days of the year for anyone in need.

Historically, our giving significantly drops during June, July, and August, but our homeless guests continue to need your support. This is why we need friends like you to come alongside hurting people during the hottest months of the year!

Can those experiencing homelessness right here in Philly depend on you this summer?

Thank you for keeping the homeless, hungry, and hurting in Philadelphia at the forefront of your mind during the summer season as we continue to serve during this pandemic. Your support lets our homeless guests know that they are not alone, and someone hasn’t given up on them. You are
making a great impact, and for that I am grateful!

Yours in Christ's Service,

Jeremy Montgomery
