The Wounded Healer: Helping the Helping Professional

Wednesday, February 12, 2020 @ 3-4:30pm ET (2CT/1MT/12PT)

Description: Burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma are landmines in the field of addiction work. Many of us struggle with work demands, familial expectations, and the desire for a fulfilling personal life. Our supervisors remind us of self-care, but who has the energy to add one more task to a stressful day? In order to thrive in this field, it’s crucial we shine a light on what really matters when it comes to caring for ourselves and the barriers that get in the way of being our best selves. This experiential workshop will differentially define burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma; provide a deep understanding of self-compassion; and support participants in evaluating crucial components of their individual self-care plan to support the healthiest version of themselves.

Presenter: Sarah Buino, LCSW, CADC, CDWF

Sarah Buino, LCSW, CADC, CDWF, is the founder of Head/Heart Therapy, Inc. She holds a Master’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago and specializes in shame and substance use disorders. She’s also the host of a podcast, Conversations With a Wounded Healer, which examines the role of one’s own healing while being a care-giving professional.

Welcome to Worthwhile Wear

A BIT ABOUT US
Worthwhile Wear exists to end modern-day slavery, which includes sex and labor trafficking. We launched our first program in India in 2012 when we partnered with local organizations to offer vocational training to survivors of sex trafficking.

But before too long, we discovered that human trafficking, or forced prostitution, is a local problem too. Our challenge was discovering what unmet needs existed and deciding how we could have an impact. We soon learned that one of the greatest needs was long-term residential housing and trauma therapy for women escaping from human trafficking.

In response, we opened The Well, a safe home for survivors, along with its companion Education and Counseling Center. Women over age 18 can live at The Well for up to two years and receive services such as in-depth trauma counseling, education, vocational training, and art therapy. Volunteers and donors provide the resources required to run The Well, while our thrift store supplies job training and sustainable income.
