Join Mariners Inn as we celebrate our fourth annual SHE: Tilted Crown Affair event! The SHE Program started as a way to engage daughters of the men who came to Mariners Inn to work toward recovery from substance abuse. The young women go through counseling, learn valuable life skills, work toward personal goals, exercise, learn from strong women in the community, and grow with each other.

Take action and support Overdose Awareness Day

Partnership to End Addiction

Cheryl Juaire and family

A decade ago, at the beginning of the opioid epidemic, Cheryl Juaire’s son, Corey, died of a heroin overdose at age 23. She knew little about opioid addiction when Corey struggled, and she didn’t know anyone with a child who had died, let alone from an overdose.

For the next two and a half years, she and her family grieved alone. When she received an invitation to meet other mothers who had lost a child from an overdose, they helped her get a new perspective on life with grief. She then came to understand how much grieving parents needed one another.

Her grief remains, but it now manifests itself in hope and advocacy. That hope is still there despite the death of her second son, Sean, lost to addiction in 2021.

Cheryl is working to support families and recognize their loss in a public and cathartic way by asking Federal and state governments to fly flags at half-staff in honor of Overdose Awareness Day. Ask your members of Congress to cosponsor a resolution, H.Res. 349, to encourage federal buildings to lower flags to half-staff in support of Overdose Awareness Day to help bring attention to the national overdose crisis and honor the lives lost.

Support Overdose Awareness Day

People and families struggling with substance use and addiction encounter a variety of systemic challenges throughout their journey, which is why we created a new section of our website called "Help Us Change the Story of Addiction." The site features personal stories like Cheryl’s that bring these structural barriers to life. Each story highlighted will offer visitors an opportunity to advocate for specific policy change by signing an action alert or by sharing similar stories from their own journey.

Let’s start re-writing the story of addiction today.

Core Values of The River Source Admissions Team

Meet Stephen Leza, Garrett Kitchens, and Heather Amado

Here at The River Source, our staff have deep and personal investments in ensuring that our clients are given every possible chance to succeed. To that end, it’s important to them that they get a full grasp of every client’s needs, communicate clearly and truthfully, and find the perfect individual solution for each person they see.

Our current Director of Admissions, Stephen Leza, along with our two former Director of Admissions, Garrett Kitchens (now Director of Marketing & Outreach) and Heather Amado (Outreach Coordinator), sat down together to share their thoughts on the admissions and onboarding process in our latest blog, “The Core Values of The River Source Admissions Team, and How They Benefit Our Clients.”

The Core Values of The River Source Admissions Team

Every person’s addiction case is different, and the team at The River Source knows full well that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for each person. With that in mind, how do we apply the core values of The River Source during our admissions process?

First and foremost, our goal with anyone who comes to us is to get them on a path to recovery and sobriety — no matter what it takes. As Heather explains, not everyone’s needs will line up with what The River Source provides, but that doesn’t mean we send them away empty-handed. We are connected to a number of places that provide different kinds of care, and a large part of our Admissions Team’s job is to help people find care that’s tailored to their needs, here or elsewhere.

That’s why communication is so important at The River Source: We’re all on the same team, and together is how we’ll find the best solution for each client. By communicating promptly and clearly, and finding creative ways to meet people’s needs, our Admissions Team performs a vital service whenever they’re called on. Hear Stephen, Garrett, and Heather’s take on The River Source’s core values, and how even the first steps of a client’s recovery journey can give them a new lease on life.
