This Week is National Prevention Week!
FacebookLinkedInTwitter

NAADAC is excited to partner with the Substance and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for the 2018 National Prevention Week (NPW) taking place this week from May 13-19, 2018.

Everyone can take part in NPW by planning events around one or all of the NPW topics. To find related events, check out the NPW Community Events page.

Another way to get involved is by joining the National Prevention Week movement on social media by participating in this year's NPW Prevention Challenge, Dear Future Me. Here's how to participate:
  1. Write a letter or draw a picture about the choices you’re making to live a healthy, happy life.
  2. Take a picture of your letter or record a video of yourself reading your letter.
  3. Share it on social media using the hashtag #DearFutureMe and #NPW2018.
  4. Tag a few friends so they can participate and add their Dear Future Me letter to the NPW conversation.
  5. Share any or all of the Dear Future Me videos on social media to encourage others to participate as well.
The NPW 2018 theme is “Action Today. Healthier Tomorrow.” This theme reminds us that simple, daily acts of prevention, like helping a friend make positive choices or supporting a family member in need, can lead to healthier lives for each of us today, and stronger, happier communities tomorrow.

Call Your U.S. Representative Today to Oppose the Overdose Prevention and Patient Safety Act (H.R. 5795)
As an advocate for addiction professionals and their clients, NAADAC opposes the Overdose Prevention and Patient Safety Act (H.R. 5795) and believes the bill would have unintended consequences for individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) who could be subject to discrimination and legal consequences in the event that their information is improperly used or discussed.  H.R. 5795 is scheduled for consideration by the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday, May 17, as part of the Committee's continuing efforts to advance a large package of opioid response bills. Your voice is critical to stopping this misguided policy change. Call your U.S. Representative TODAY to oppose H.R. 5795.
Why? Here's why recovery organizations, patient advocacy groups, and health policy organizations strongly oppose H.R. 5795:
  • The bill is harmful: It would eliminate the SUD patient's current legal ability to consent to disclose his/her SUD treatment information for "treatment, payment, and health care operations" purposes, allowing such information to be disclosed and re-disclosed to health plans, health care providers, and other entities without the patient's knowledge and consent;
  • The bill could discourage people from getting SUD treatment: Since the bill's proposed anti-discrimination provisions will not be sufficient to protect people currently using illegal substances from discrimination or protect their patient records from being subpoenaed or seized and used to prosecute them, people might be afraid to get the treatment they need; and
  • The bill is unnecessary: Current federal confidentiality law, 42 U.S.C. §290dd-2 and its recently updated regulations at 42 C.F.R. Part 2, support care coordination among providers in electronic health systems and current health delivery models, while maintaining patient confidentiality.
Call Your U.S. Representative TODAY: Please call the U.S. Capitol directly at 202.224.3121 to be connected to your U.S. Representative to urge him/her to oppose H.R. 5795.  Click here to find your U.S. Representative.
  • What You Need to Say: "As an addiction professional and constituent who lives in the Representative's district, I would like the Representative to oppose the Overdose Prevention and Safety Act, H.R. 5795 during this week's Energy and Commerce Committee markup.  This bill would reduce fundamental protections for people receiving addiction treatment by allowing the sharing of patient health information to a wide range of entities without their consent.  In the middle of our nation's opioid crisis, H.R. 5795 would prevent people from entering care out of fear that their treatment records could be used against them in harmful and discriminatory ways."

What Parents Need to Know About College Binge Drinking

by Amelia Arria, Ph.D.
Binge drinking alcohol
The feeling of sending a grown child off to college for the first time can be described as a strange mixture of pride, relief and severe anxiety. What do parents need to know as their adult child takes this big step? As a public health researcher, I have some good news to share, and some reminders about what to be aware of during this critical transition for both you and them.

The first piece of good news is that your voice matters. Your child might not tell you, but when researchers have asked them about your influence, they find that parent attitudes and the rules you put in place during their development are major influences on their risk-taking behavior. Preparing and protecting your child from engaging in excessive drinking during college starts way before “drop-off” day. Even in middle school, and throughout high school, sending a clear message of your disapproval for underage drinking is critical and equally important in college.

To some parents, it might be tempting to think that you can “teach” your child how to drink responsibly by allowing them to drink before going to college. Many parents also think that not allowing their children to drink turns alcohol into “forbidden fruit,” increasing the child’s interest in drinking. Instead, research has shown that having parents who communicate clear expectations against using alcohol during high school is associated with a lower chance of drinking excessively during college.
