Clinicians will explore potential client profiles and learn how to identify appropriate buprenorphine patients. SAMHSA and ONC Publish New Guidance Documents Updating and Clarifying 42 CFR Part 2
FacebookLinkedInTwitter
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrative (SAMHSA) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published two fact sheets to help substance use disorder patients and treatment providers better understand the confidentiality protections for substance use disorder information, 42 CFR Part 2.

The first fact sheet, Disclosure of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records: Does Part 2 Apply to Me?” helps clarify what a Part 2 Program is, and how health care providers can determine how Part 2 applies to them by depicting scenarios they might encounter when caring for patients. The second fact sheet, “Disclosure of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records: How Do I Exchange Part 2 Data?” describes how Part 2 applies to the electronic exchange of healthcare records with a Part 2 Program.

SAMHSA also updated its 2011 guidance, “Applying the Substance Abuse Confidentiality Regulations,” to clarify that wherever the Part 2 regulations refer to a patient’s “spouse,” the regulations must be interpreted to include a same-sex spouse, even if the couple now lives in a jurisdiction that does not recognize same-sex marriage.
