News-Impact-Advocacy

September 24, 2015
The theme for Recovery Month 2015 is Join the Voices for Recovery: Visible, Vocal, Valuable!, which highlights the value of peer support in educating, mentoring, and helping others. The theme also invites individuals in recovery and their support systems to be catalysts and active change agents in communities, and in civic and advocacy engagements. It encourages individuals to start conversations about the prevention, treatment, and recovery of behavioral health conditions at earlier stages of life. (www.recoverymonth.gov)

25,000 Celebrate Recovery
September 19
Penn's Landing, Philadelphia

The Council would like to thank the record breaking 25,000 people who walked in support of recovery. Individuals, families, elected officials, organizations, businesses and schools came to Penn's Landing for the 14th Annual Recovery Walks! 2015.
You demonstrated that the Recovery Community is a constituency of consequence, that is willing to stand up to end stigma and be a voice for the 20 million still needing to access services to sustain long-term recovery.

Over 300 members of the Honor Guard, representing a total of 5,629 years in recovery, led the walk.

During the walk, education and advocacy activities included:
  • New voter registration
  • Family education booth
  • Petition to Pennsylvania lawmakers to pass a budget that includes $20 million for emergency treatment
  • Pennsylvania Commitment for Involvement in Healthcare Advocacy
  • Naloxone Education and Overdose Prevention Information Distribution
This year, we received more media attention than ever before!  There is power in numbers and our voices are being heard!  Plan to attend Recovery Walks! 2016 next September.

Study will show Effectiveness of Alternative Recovery Groups.

WE NEED YOUR VOICE

September 21, 2015

Hello WFS Friends and Colleagues!

We have some very important news!  Women for Sobriety (WFS) is now participating in a study called the Peer Alternatives to Addiction (PAL) Study, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health and led by Dr. Sarah Zemore.  This is a critical study that will provide empirical information on the effectiveness of WFS and other alternatives to AA, including SMART Recovery and LifeRing.  The results could help WFS by substantiating its effectiveness, and will provide treatment providers and the public with new information relevant to choosing a support group in recovery.

The study involves online surveys with a projected sample of 800 people, and we are eager to obtain as many participants as possible so that WFS is well-represented.  So, we would like to ask you to go to the study website athttp://www.thepalstudy.org and consider participating.  Participants will receive Amazon gift cards for their participation, and can earn as much as $80.

Please note that because this is a small study focusing on in-person meetings, only those who have attended an in-person meeting in the past 30 days are eligible.  The research team hopes to study online-only participation in the future.

Please feel free to email me or Project Coordinator Deidre Patterson (dpatterson@arg.org) of the research team with any questions about the study.

Thank you in advance for your help and support of WFS!
Warm regards,
Becky Fenner, WFS Director

September 19 CHP 29 v 11 TWELVE STEPPING WITH STRENGTH FROM THE PSALMS

The Lord will give strength to His people :The Lord will bless His people with peace .(GODS BIG BOOK)

STEP 1 We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our lives had become unmanageable .

God never intended for us to live life addicted , alone , and powerless ! Step one is a key ! Addiction is a prison in which we live and the door to our cell is wide open but selfishness , fear , and pride are the guards who wont let us leave our cell .In order to get passed the guards we have to tell God we are unable to get pass the guards and through our weakness , He will move selfishness , fear , and pride its a promise in His Big Book .Fifteen years ago I lived in that prison and God helped me get out . I have learned that God is faithful and powerful ,and even in the worse time of my life , He loved me when no one else did . By choice addiction gave me a life sentence with the possibility of a premature  death but Jesus Christ was sent to set me free and with Him was freedom and peace .

Isaiah 42:6-7 "I am the LORD, I have called You in righteousness, I will also hold You by the hand and watch over You, And I will appoint You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the nations, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the dungeon And those who dwell in darkness from the prison. (GODS BIG BOOK) By Joseph Dickerson
