Accessing Opioid Use Disorder Medications During COVID-19

Help in Accessing Critical Medications for Your Loved One

accessing opioid use disorder medications during COVID-19
If your child or loved one is considering or using pharmacotherapy, also known as medication-assisted treatment, to treat their opioid use disorder, you may be wondering how COVID-19 will impact their ability to get these critical medications. Each Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) is subject to state regulations as to how medications can be dispensed, so methods will vary accordingly. Encourage your child to talk with their provider about these policies so there is no lapse in care or medication.
Assuming your child is attending an OTP, it may be helpful to know the following:
  • What is being done to step up cleaning and disinfecting the facility?
  • What are plans for group and individual counseling given social distancing?
  • How does the clinic plan to handle cases where a person is showing symptoms of the virus?
  • What should I do if my child has COVID-19 symptoms?
Similarly, during dosing, your loved one should take all necessary precautions when going inside a program facility and interacting with others. In the event that the clinic closes, the provider should be able to tell you where you can locate an alternate site and staff to provide dosing.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has developed guidelines for Opioid Treatment Programs to reduce the spread of the virus. As of March 16, states may request the ability for OTPs to offer 28 days of take-home doses of medication for all stable patients. The state may also request up to 14 days of medication for those patients who are not as stable, but believed to be able to safely manage this level of medication. If patients are unable to manage their medications, they will have to attend the OTP on a daily basis. If your child receives a take-home dose, discuss how you can help them maintain their dosing schedule as the increased stress could potentially result in taking more medication than prescribed.

As Peer Supporters how do we support people in these stressful times?

It is important that we practice in the way we have always worked; from a place of compassion and empathy. That we stand with people and hear their concerns and fears. That we validate their feelings; without feeding into any hysteria about the virus.

How do we do that?

We stay up to date with information about what is happening. This allows us to be able to have discussions about what is happening and to provide links to useful resources.

As Peer Supporters, or as we at RPLYT call Exploration Facilitators, our role is to support people to explore their options. By supporting people to have the accurate facts and encouraging them to talk about their fears, concerns, hopes, dreams, etc., we support them to decide for themselves what they want to do as they move forward through this time. It may be just supporting them to see that they are doing everything they can already. The discussions we have with people, can support them to see that their fears are not theirs alone, that many people feel uncertain about what the future holds. It is the strength of knowing that we are all in this together and, as a community supporting each other, we can get through it.

As Peer Supporters, let’s:

  • listen without judgement

  • validate people’s feelings (remember our thoughts and feelings are our reality)

  • support people getting accurate information

  • allow people to just be silent if they wish; we can just be there with them – in person, videoconferencing or on the phone

  • let them know they are not alone; that you are there with them

  • support people to find those moments where they are not focused on the doom and gloom; where they get to do normal things that support their health and wellness – whatever that is for that person.
I know for me, I get caught up from wanting to hear everything that the media says, to being distraught and feeling bombarded by the media. I know that I have to take breaks from the media and my head and just do normal things. Well, as normal as possible at this time. I walk my dog. I cook something. I wash dishes. I watch a TV show or a movie. I connect with friends on FaceTime or the phone, whatever has me feel as connected as I can.

Our hope is to support you to find your own way of supporting yourself while you support others.

Charlotte and I are here to support you.
Stay well,
Robyn

This Video Left Me SPEECHLESS | Life Can Change In An Instant!!

Mansion Update

Mansion Update
Dear Friend,

I thought you would appreciate an update about how we are getting along in spite of the Coronavirus. The most important thing is that we continue to minister to the young men and women the Lord has sent to us. We are staying open for them, while exercising wise precautions.

It has been a hard couple of weeks, but we are in good spirits. The virus causes lots of challenges, but our staff has risen to the occasion-giving of themselves daily, minute by minute.

Some steps we are taking to keep the virus at bay include; cleaning and disinfecting according to CDC recommendations, limiting the number of trips away from the property, not allowing outside visitors-except to receive deliveries of food and other necessities. The most far-reaching one is the delaying of taking in new Residents.  I look forward to the time when we can open back up and see lots of new faces.

We will remain vigilant as we look to the Lord for our provision and protection; and we thank you for being an important part of that provision. I realize that this is a very difficult time for everyone and you may be even facing real and horrific struggles. So please allow us to pray for you. Just email me at info@hismansion.com with any requests.

I want to keep God's Word and perspective in the forefront of my mind, looking to Him for hope and guidance. Psalm 62:5-8 reads:

-Yes, my soul, finds rest in God; my hope comes from Him.
-Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
-My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge.
-Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.

Praise the Lord and blessings to you,

Ed Perrine, CEO
