Health literacy – finding, understanding, and using information to make informed health decisions – requires a variety of skills that teens can learn in the classroom. These skills empower teens to reject misinformation and make choices to access content that supports their overall health and well-being.

When it comes to interpreting messages about alcohol and other substances, health literacy is especially important for teens. Teens get messages about drugs and alcohol from the news media and social media, as well as their peers, families, and extended social networks.

NIDA’s new lesson on health literacy helps educators give teens tools and tips for accessing valid and reliable health information. The lesson:

  • Aligns with national education standards
  • Provides teacher prompts and preparation guidance
  • Includes downloadable student worksheets for printing or completing on a computer

For more lessons from NIDA, check out Scholastic Heads Up: Real News About Drugs and Your Body, created as part of a collaboration between Scholastic and NIDA.
