Overview:

Children are often the first ones hurt and the last ones helped when substance use is impacting the family. In this workshop, we will explore how children are impacted, learn tools to help them cope, and important messages for children to hear. Participants can learn new tools to help families change the family legacy and discover recovery together. 



Participants Will:

  • Learn accurate and age-appropriate language to use in order to teach children about substance use.
  • Learn to identify ways that children may be affected by substance use.
  • Identify therapeutic strategies that foster the development of key resilience skills

Hazelden Betty Ford Children's Program - Aurora, CO
Lindsey Chadwick (She/hers), MA, LPC, has worked for the Hazelden Betty Ford Children’s Program in Aurora, Colorado since 2008. She began working at HBFF after completing her undergraduate degree in Sociology at Colorado State University. She completed her master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Colorado Denver in 2013. Lindsey has over 12 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families in individual and group settings

Former professional skateboarder, TV stuntman, and recovery advocate Brandon Novak joins Elizabeth Vargas to talk about how he went from a skateboarding prodigy and reality star to homeless. He also shares where he is now: celebrating six years of recovery and spreading hope to others who are struggling.

Brandon opens up to Elizabeth about “underestimating” his addiction, and the consequences he faced during his decades-long journey with substance use. He also talks about how his mother coped with his addiction and the only two regrets he has today.
