Sensory Based Strategies for Self-Regulation: 
How our senses can help our brains and bodies stay more calm.

Overview:
Learn how our senses impact self-regulation and how can they can be used as tools to help calm or alert the brain and body. Sensorimotor strategies can be used to organize the brain and there are many ways to use them with your clients/patients beyond just sensory rooms. We will explore the 8 senses, review alerting and calming strategies within each sensory system, and review the differences between a sensory diet and sensory toolkit. This presentation will introduce sensory and sensorimotor as a therapeutic lens for working with your clients.
By the end of event you will be able to:
  1. Name the 8 senses
  2. List 3 strategies for alerting the brain and body
  3. List 3 strategies for calming the brain and body

Stormy has worked for ten years in the field of mental health as occupational therapist and over twelve years in sensory processing. Her diverse background includes working in school-based settings, sensory integration clinics/private practices, hospital setting with complex medical conditions, mental health clinics for children, residential treatment centers for adolescents, and residential treatment centers for substance abuse rehabilitation. Stormy lectures/presents to mental health clinicians and educators at conferences, CEU events, and universities. She most recently launched an online training program for clinicians that is approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association as well as the National Association of Social Workers. A main focus for Talitha (Stormy) is to provide design and implementation of sensory rooms, staff training and education, and life skills program design for substance abuse/dual diagnosis treatment centers. She has a BA from Duke University, her medical doctorate from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and her MS in Occupational Therapy from University of Southern California with an emphasis in pediatrics and sensory integration.

💫 Adapting To The New Normal

 

This is a new era that we are living in right now. The past seven months we've experienced together is something that's unprecedented in our lifetimes. Change can be hard, but is often necessary to grow.

As a people in recovery, we've learned to adapt to change and acquire new skills because of it. These strategies and tools are directly transferrable to the situation the whole world finds itself in right now.
