Drug Tests: Are They Worth It?

Should You Drug Test Your Child?
At home drug testing
Growing up is never easy, and being a parent these days presents a whole host of challenges. Peer pressure to experiment with drugs can be fierce and difficult to resist, but we love our children and we want to keep them safe.

As a parent searching for answers, you may be considering drug testing with the expectation that testing will discourage your son or daughter from experimenting with substances, hopefully preventing a world of hurt down the road. If you suspect your child is already using drugs, you may assume that testing will discourage experimental use before it escalates into serious use or addiction.

Testing your child can make a lot of sense for worried parents. After all, testing kits are readily available, relatively inexpensive and easy to use. However, many experts recommend against drug testing our kids unless it is done by a medical professional, and only when it is truly warranted.

United Veterans Beacon House Annual BBQ was a great day!

Celebrating the Veterans We Serve
Last Tuesday, we kicked off 4th of July week with the United Veterans Beacon House Annual Independence Day BBQ. More than 100 people gathered together to enjoy an afternoon of great food and fun in celebration of the veterans we serve.

There were Beacon House supporters on hand to share in the festivities, including local elected officials, board trustees, community partners, supporters, and staff members. We were honored to have the very talented Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi on hand to entertain our veterans singing classics like "take a load off Annie" and "horse with no name." It was beautiful to see so many community members on hand to help serve, chat with, and support the men and women in our programs. Together we served over 75 veteran residents and several community members in need.

Fostering Feelings of Awe

Fostering Feelings of Awe

Michiganders have always been my favorite group of people for many reasons. I LOVE the way that Michiganders love their state. From Detroit, to Grand Rapids, to Traverse City, to the Upper Peninsula – you would be hard pressed to find a Michigander who did not endorse and thoroughly enjoy the natural beauty of their […]
