Misusing ADHD Drugs May Cause Long-Term Impairment to Brain Function: Study

Young people who misuse prescription stimulants to increase their attention span and memory may be risking long-term impairment to brain function, a new study suggests.

Researchers reviewed studies on potential lasting side effects of misusing “study drugs” such as Ritalin or Proviigil. They found any short-term boosts in mental performance were offset by long-term decrease in brain plasticity, needed for planning ahead, switching between tasks and being flexible in behavior.

One of the drugs studied was methylphenidate, sold under the brand names Ritalin and Concerta. The drug is prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The researchers also looked at modafinil (Proviigil), used to treat sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, Time reports. In addition, they surveyed the research on an emerging class of drugs called ampakines, being studied by the U.S. military to see if it will increase alertness in soldiers.

“What’s safe for adults is not necessarily safe for kids,” lead researcher Kimberly Urban of the University of Delaware said in a news release. “The human brain continues to develop until our late twenties or early thirties. Young people are especially prone to abuse smart drugs, but also more vulnerable to any side-effects. We simply don’t know enough about the long-term effects of these drugs on the developing brain to conclude they are safe.”

The findings are published in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience.

Last year, the Partnership Attitude Tracking Study found one in eight teens (13 percent) reports that they have taken the stimulants Ritalin or Adderall when it was not prescribed for them, at least once in their lifetime.

MAY 14 v 3 TWELVE STEPPING WITH POWER IN THE PROVERB

A fool’s proud talk becomes a rod that beats him,
but the words of the wise keep them safe.

STEP 3 - Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

We are at most times our own worst enemy . Beating ourselves up and criticizing and over analyzing is a big waste of your time. Nine out of ten times your addiction is caused by the fact that you don't like yourself or your life . Step one and two will let you know that God is there and wants to help , but you have to shut your mouth and stop thinking and dwelling on every little thing that has happened in your life . LET GO LET GOD or drown and die in foolishness self pity and fear.

Jeremiah 29 11 -13 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

MAY 13 v 16 TWELVE STEPPING WITH POWER IN THE PROVERB

Wise people think before they act;
fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.

STEP 7 - Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

How can you be wise when your a numb skull .That is what drugs and alcohol do to you make you a numb skull . Your an idiot if you think that you have everything under control and the life of addiction in which you live is normal. The enemy of your soul (addiction) wants to steal , torture , and eventually kill . I could not see any of this when I was lost in my world .That is what it was my world and I had all the answers . I was sick with pride , foolishness , guilt , depression , fear , insecurities , anger , and the list goes on . Addiction helped me build a wall , at first I thought these walls would keep me safe and protect me . The walls I discovered were a trap , a Dungeon built for my torture , a palace of pain and sorrows . Sixteen years was my sentence ! Some get life and others never get out . Look I do not know you , but I do know what it is like to live in that Dungeon ,to think I have all the answers and nobody loves me or even cares . Addiction is a cruel task master and it will continue to tell you want to hear because it wants you caged and silent or just dead prematurely. Stop listening to the lies and listen to the cries of loved ones . Pray for the hand of the Lord too give you sight too find the twelve steps out of that Dungeon .

2 Timothy 3 v 16 - All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right .
