The Importance of Family in Treating
Young Adults in Recovery
Working with young adults makes it particularly important for families and loved ones to provide constant support and encouragement. Conversations with the young adults and family’s needs to be a significant part of treatment to discuss boundaries, setting realistic goals and setting up parameters to help the young adult achieve these goals.

Because so many of the young adults are still living in their homes, it is imperative to include the family system throughout treatment, despite the reluctance of the young adult. A positive and supportive environment may be tantamount to recovery. Caregivers who are involved in treatment, understand its importance work with treatment providers, and are engaged in recovery are more likely to see successful recovery in their loved one than those who aren’t involved, National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). This webinar will explore strategies to both engage the young adult who is most likely to refuse family involvement, and strategies to engage the families in this meaningful treatment.

Presenter
Trish Caldwell, MFT, LPC, CCDP-D, CAADC, CCTP, has over 25 years of experience working with adolescents and young adults along with their families. She has both treated families and created programs to help families deal with the struggles of addiction and ways they can support their loved one’s recovery, as well as begin a journey of recovery for themselves. She has also run multifamily DBT groups for adolescents and young adults and their families to help them work collaboratively through their addiction, strengthen their communication skills, and set appropriate boundaries to help create a safe place to begin their recovery. Her areas of expertise are addiction, co-occurring disorders, ADHD, trauma, and program development. Her work experiences include working in: long term residential treatment facilities for adolescents; secured facility for adjudicated youth; partial hospitalization for children and adolescents, outpatient treatment for co-occurring disorders and my current role as the director of Family services at RCA. She has years of experience as both a local and regional trainer.
