Description: As codified in the NAADAC/NCC AP Code of Ethics, addiction professionals are called to advocate on behalf of clients at the individual, group, institutional, and societal levels. In this presentation, we will examine the central policy discussions surrounding the addiction profession in Washington, DC. We will also explore the critical role advocacy plays in shaping the delivery of treatment and recovery services. Finally, we will look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the addiction profession in Congress and across the federal agencies.

Presenters: Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, BSW, NCAC II, CDC III, SAP, and Tim Casey, Policy Advisor

Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, BSW, NCAC II, CDC III, SAP, is the Executive Director of NAADAC. She previously served as the Executive Director of Danya Institute and the Central East ATTC. Prior to that, she was the Program Director for Volunteers of America Western Washington serving as the administrator of alcohol/drug centers and a trainer in Domestic Violence/Anger Management and Conflict Resolution. She has served as President of NAADAC, Certification Board Commissioner, International Chair, Treasurer, and Legislative Chair for NAADAC.
Tim Casey, Policy Advisor, has a proven record of leadership in advancing the federal priorities of national associations, corporations, consumer organizations, and nonprofits. On Capitol Hill Casey is a trusted resource to Members of Congress and their staff. Casey’s experience in the House and Senate, combined with his time as a senior lobbyist for prominent health care associations, offers clients sound policy advice, strategic political counsel, and a keen instinct for delivering on key priorities before Congress and the Administration.

Energy Psychology Techniques for Reducing Trauma & Addiction

Description: Energy psychology techniques have shown continuous efficacy in reducing trauma brain responses. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Thought Field Therapy (TFT) use tapping on acupressure meridians to reduce agitated sympathetic nervous system agitation to parasympathetic nervous system resting response within minutes. The webinar will discuss the neuroscience behind the techniques and demonstrate the use of these techniques to reduce anxiety in clients.

Presenter: Tricia Chandler, PhD, MA, LPC, MAC

Tricia Chandler, PhD, MA, LPC, MAC, has been working in clinical trauma & co-occurring disorders treatment for 25 years as a Licensed Professional Counselor and teaching full-time graduate online professional and addiction counseling students for nine years. Chandler has worked in private practice with individual clients, the inpatient setting, and outpatient programs. She has created an integrative program at an extended care facility for women with co-occurring disorders in 2011 and published research findings in a peer-reviewed journal in 2013.

Peer Recovery Support Series, Section VI: A Deeper Dive Into Coaching Recovery

Description: In this webinar, Phil Valentine, RCP, Executive Director of the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR), will lead participants into a deeper understanding of the recovery coach role and the underpinning philosophies that led to the development of the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy© (RCA). Valentine will also review some training fundamentals, how best to implement the recovery coach service (including supervision), and shed some personal insight on the future of recovery coaching.

Phil Valentine, RCP, is the Executive Director for the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR). An accomplished author and trainer, Valentine has gained recognition as a leader in the recovery community. In 2006, the Johnson Institute recognized his efforts with an America Honors Recovery award. In 2008, Faces and Voices of Recovery honored CCAR with the first Joel Hernandez Voice of the Recovery Community Award. In 2009, the Hartford Business Journal named Valentine the Non-Profit Executive of the Year.

The Americans with Disabilities Act: SUDs and Barriers to Treatment and Recovery

Description: There are thousands of people in recovery from addiction unaware of their civil rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This presentation will provide information on the ADA and how it applies to individuals in treatment for or recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs). It will also explain how the ADA addresses alcohol, in addition to providing a general review of the law and cases that have interpreted the ADA’s protections for these individuals. This presentation will provide examples of instances when a person is covered under the ADA and how healthcare providers, advocates, attorneys, and others who help individuals with SUDs can support their client or patient’s ADA rights. This includes a discussion of where to file complaints if it appears that an individual’s ADA rights are being violated.

Presenters: Oce Harrison, EdD, and Charlotte Lanvers, JD

Oce Harrison, EdD, has directed the New England ADA Center since 2001. She provides “ADA, Addiction, Recovery” trainings throughout the region. Harrison has presented a Massachusetts Organization for Addiction and Recovery (MOAR) Webinar, at the Massachusetts Alcohol and Drug Counselors Association Annual Conference (MAADAC) and in 18 cities and towns in Massachusetts. She also created the ADA National “The ADA, Addiction and Recovery Fact Sheet” and “The ADA, Addiction, Recovery Employment Fact Sheet.”

Charlotte Lanvers, JD, is a Trial Attorney in the Disability Rights Section of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice (DOJ), where she enforces the ADA. From 2012-2014, Lanvers worked as a Staff Attorney at the Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR). Prior to joining OCR, Lanvers worked at Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund as a Skadden Fellow and Staff Attorney on cases enforcing the rights of individuals with disabilities. Lanvers holds a Juris Doctorate from Cornell Law School.
