2019 Annual Conference: Call for Poster Presentations

NAADAC members and non-members are invited to submit poster presentation proposals for display at the 2019 Annual Conference. NAADAC encourages young investigators, researchers, and addiction professionals from diverse organizations and fields to submit.
The 2019 Annual Conference will be held at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld from September 28 - October 3, 2019. Posters will be on display during Sunday, September 29th and Monday, September 30th with presentations taking place on September 29th.
Submission Deadline: Friday, March 15, 2019

The 2019 National Drug Control Strategy Has Been Released

On Thursday, January 31, 2019, the Office of National Drug Control Policy released the 2019 National Drug Control Strategy, which establishes the White House’s priorities for addressing the challenge of drug trafficking and use.

This strategy provides the strategic direction necessary for the Federal government to build a stronger, healthier, drug-free society. The overarching goal of the strategy is to save lives by engaging in a comprehensive approach that includes preventing initiates to drug use, promoting treatment services leading to long-term recovery, and aggressively reducing the availability of illicit drugs in America’s communities.

Take the Recovery to Practice Survey

The University of North Texas (UNT) Rehabilitation and Health Services Department needs YOUR help to support the Recovery to Practice (RTP) Initiative by taking a quick survey on how recovery concepts and recovery-oriented systems of care are currently being incorporated by addiction professionals and organizations in the field of addiction recovery.

The information gathered from this survey will be used to determine the best and most effective way to deliver continuing education and recovery-oriented training specific to addiction professionals.

The Recovery to Practice Initiative is supported through the UNT Rehabilitation and Health Services Departmentthe Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

SAMHSA Grant Application Opportunity

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) is accepting applications for the Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act (STOP Act) grants.

The goal of this program is to prevent and reduce alcohol use among youth and young adults ages 12-20 in communities throughout the United States. The activities that are implemented in the project will aim to address community norms regarding alcohol use by youth, reduce opportunities for underage drinking, create changes in underage drinking enforcement efforts, address penalties for underage use, and/or reduce the prevalence of negative consequences associated with underage drinking.

SAMHSA plans to issue 20 grants of up to $50,000 per year for up to four years. Eligible applicants include domestic public and private nonprofit entities that are current or former Drug-Free Communities Support Program (DFC) recipients. Past STOP Act recipients are also eligible to apply.

Audience:
Substance abuse and mental health counselors, social workers, nurses, recovery counselors and interested human services professionals.
Purpose:
This training will address employee burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.  Issues that will be addressed include: recognizing and addressing symptoms of compassion fatigue in ourselves and our peers.  The training will also address the importance of debriefing, when it’s necessary, as well as how to complete a formal and informal debriefing.  In addition, we will discuss relaxation methods and the importance role of self-care for professionals.   
Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:
  • Identify the difference between burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma
  • Identify signs and symptoms of vicarious trauma and how it can impact human service professionals
  • Identify process and steps for informal and formal debriefing
  • Identify how self-care practices are detrimental to the health of the service professional
Faculty:
Annie Fridh, PsyD, is the Vice President of Operations at Jackson Recovery Centers.  Annie has more than 25 years of experience and leadership in behavioral healthcare. Prior to moving to Siouxland, she most recently served as the Rosecrance Administrator of Adult Behavioral Health. Annie earned her Bachelor of Science in Family Social Services from Northern Illinois University and her M.S. in Child and Family Studies: Marriage & Family Therapy from Northern Illinois University. She obtained her Doctorate of Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs):
Program approved for 3 hours of continuing education with IBSAC for Iowa Substance Abuse Counselors and 3 hours of continuing Social Work education. Jackson Recovery Centers is an Iowa Board of Social Work Examiners approved provider #0241.
