While residential treatment provides a natural “safe zone” where people seeking sobriety can focus on battling the immediate crisis of addiction, those of us working as treatment providers know that the real work of recovery begins when residential or formal treatment ends. The combination of medical detox, followed by rigorous counseling and family work while in treatment, are only the first steps to a life of freedom from a substance use disorder. So, what should families expect when their loved one prepares to leave treatment and head back home?

What is Discharge Planning?

Discharge planning is a critical component of a treatment program which helps patients and their families prepare to navigate the ups and downs of a sober life. A detailed and organized discharge plan can provide both stability for the person entering recovery and peace of mind for their families. We've outlined the key components of a discharge plan as well as what questions to ask as your loved one engages in treatment.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem in America, and are often the driving force behind substance use. However, few therapists are trained in the top, evidence-based treatment for the anxiety spectrum - Exposure With Response Prevention (ERP). Learn from an ERP expert about the basic principles behind the most powerful treatment in the mental health field.

Presenter
Andrea Kulberg, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist with 20 years of experience in the treatment of eating disorders and anxiety disorders. She has been employed in various hospital, residential and outpatient settings, including Eating Recovery Center of Denver’s Child & Adolescent Eating Disorders Program. She is currently the Clinical Director at La Ventana of Santa Barbara, a partial hospital and intensive outpatient center for the treatment of eating disorders and other mental health problems. Due to her background in clinical neuropsychology, Dr. Kulberg brings an understanding of brain-behavior relationships to her work, and is able to treat complex cases wherein patients may have developmental challenges or acquired neurological problems. After her initial training in San Diego at Alliant International University, Dr. Kulberg taught psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Intergenerational Trauma and the Healing Forest Model

Description: The concept of Wellbriety (sobriety/wellness) will be introduced as balance and connection to the natural laws that create healing. The unfortunate consequences of trauma include not believing you have a future, difficulties within families and a distrust of the outside world, which is passed down throughout each generation. Healing will take place through an application of cultural and spiritual knowledge.

J. Carlos Rivera, CADC III, is the Executive Director at White Bison, Inc. located in Colorado Springs, CO. Rivera is an enrolled tribal member of the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians. He continues to make a difference in Native Tribal communities serving as the Executive Director for White Bison, Inc.

Ensuring Fidelity to Motivational Interviewing Among Frontline Service Providers

Description: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based treatment protocol often used when treating individuals with substance use disorders. The literature supports MI as an effective strategy for reducing symptoms of substance use disorders. This webinar will explore how fidelity to MI was monitored at Prism Health North Texas, an HIV/AIDS service organization in Dallas, Texas. We will detail specific tools, continuous improvement and evaluation processes, and practical strategies that increase fidelity to MI principles among care coordinators.

Presenters: Ben Callaway, LMSW, and Nicole S. Chisolm, MPH

Ben Callaway, LMSW, is a social worker with Prism Health North Texas in Dallas, TX where his current work focuses on providing care to dually diagnosed, HIV positive persons who are experiencing homelessness. Callaway has previously provided care to people in need at homeless shelters, academic medical centers, inpatient substance use treatment centers, and HIV clinics.
Nicole S. Chisolm, MPH, is an alumna of Drexel University. Over the past 11 years, Chisolm has applied her passion for public health and her belief in servant leadership as an advocate, researcher, evaluator, and grant writer for programs focused on examining and addressing infectious diseases, social determinants of health, and health disparities.
