Special Guest Recovery Rocker

Soon after he found heroin, Jam Alker put down his guitar and did not pick it up again for ten-plus years. What followed would be what he calls "the most toxic relationship I've ever been in" - a decade of extreme highs and lows that brought him, literally, to his knees, begging for a long-needed reawakening. "What I found out was that drugs were not my problem; drugs were my solution to my problem."

It was music that helped him change his life - and it's music that continues to keep him on his path. "Music is my therapy. Putting my experiences, both deadly and life saving, into song have helped me to heal. I owe a great deal of my new life to my music," he says.

He chronicles this story of addiction and recovery with his first full-length solo album, Sophrosyne. Learn More

Be a Part of the Honor Guard and Lead the 2017 Recovery Walks!

Honor Guard Photo
The Honor Guard, those with 10+ years of recovery, has led the Recovery Walks! since its inception.  Ten years in recovery is an important milestone and an enduring symbol. It is the symbol of hope and proof that recovery is possible and it is happening now.

Sign up for the Honor Guard at www.recoverywalks.org and click on the Honor Guard button.  As a member of the Honor Guard, you will be given a purple sash to wear and you will be part of this important group that shows what is possible with recovery.   Pick up your sash at the Honor Guard Booth in the Great Plaza before the start of the Walk.  The Honor Guard will assemble in the Plaza prior to 9 a.m. for the annual group photo.  The Honor Guard leads the start of the walk and then steps aside to cheer the walkers on.  As the walkers return to Penn's Landing the Honor Guard is there to welcome them back.

Looking for Volunteers to Tell Their Story!

We are looking for Honor Guard members who could be available to have their story videotaped before or during the walk. We would like you to discuss how long you have been in recovery, your drug of choice and what recovery means to you. This is a wonderful way to give hope to those struggling with addiction that they too can thrive in recovery.  It is important to give a face to recovery and demonstrate to our legislatures and recovery program funders that recovery works!
Please contact Nancy Adam at nadam@councilsepa.org
or 215-345-6644 if you would like to part of this important aspect of the 2017 Recovery Walks!
WHY WE ARE PROMOTING A TOBACCO FREE RECOVERY WALK

Do you know that quitting smoking supports recovery by improving overall health? Three out of every four individuals in recovery want to quit smoking. Quitting tobacco in recovery can increase your chances of staying clean and sober by 25%.  Chat with our volunteers who will have valuable information and promotional aids to help you stop smoking.
Here's your chance to be a major league pitcher!

Have you ever dreamed of throwing out the opening pitch at a major league game?  Here is your chance.  Become a team captain and raise the most donations for the 2017 Recovery Walks!  Just ask Lisa Jarrell, captain of Team Schaun Fisher!  She raised the most in donations last year and on Saturday, September 16th she will be standing on the Phillies pitcher mound!
Right now we have team Carlos Crusaders in the lead with Yoga 4 Sobriety and April's Angels closing in!  And Parkside Walkers have the most team members signed up to take part in the walk!  It's anyone's game at this point!  Good luck and cheer Lisa on at this year's Phillies game.
