Medication Assisted Recovery in Complex Situations

Wednesday, November 6, 2019 @ 3-4:30pm ET (2 CT/1 MT/12 PT)

Description: This webinar will stress the importance of doctor and counselor interactions when working with clients experiencing complex situations, including mental health diagnosis, pregnancy, pain management issues and other more complex diagnoses. We will discuss these situations from both the physician's point of view and the counselor's point of view, and the communication that is most effective among treatment team members. In these complex cases, communication regarding the treatment team is essential for the optimal situation for the client.

Presenters: Don Hall, LCDC, and Michael Weaver, MD

He serves on the Advisory Committee of the School of Human Services of Houston Community College. He is involved with the Houston-Harris County Office of Drug Control Policy.

Parents with PTSD: How Addiction Can Re-traumatize Families

Wednesday, November 20, 2019 @ 3-4:00pm ET (2 CT/1 MT/12 PT)
Description: It is well documented that addiction can have significant collateral impacts on parents, extended family, partners and friends. But what happens when these care-givers and supports also have their own Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) history? Living with, loving, and supporting a person with addiction can become personal: triggering parents, partners, and families to relive their own trauma history. This presentation will discuss how ACES can impact the family system, and will address specific support/treatment strategies using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness. Also addressed will be the CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, a body of groundbreaking research that looked at how childhood trauma affects long-term health.

Presenter: Sean Swaby, MA

Sean Swaby, MA, is a Family Counsellor with Alberta Health Services (Provincial Government-funded treatment) – Youth Residential Treatment Programs – Addiction and Forensic Mental Health. Swaby has worked for Alberta Health Services since 2005 and has over 25 years of experience working with youth and families in various recovery settings. He has a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, is a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and is an Internationally Certified Clinical Addiction Counsellor with the Canadian Addiction Counselling Certification Federation.

Higher Logic

Hope starts with just one meal.

Dear Joseph,

If you’re anything like us, you have already begun preparing for Thanksgiving. It is a day I look forward to every year because nothing compares to a good meal shared with the people you love. Unfortunately, holidays often highlight the feelings of loss and the pangs of hunger for those experiencing homelessness.

This was the case for Tony last Thanksgiving. After Tony's wife passed away, Tony was alone, depressed, and homeless. This year, your partnership is providing hearty meals for men like Tony who need a place to go on Thanksgiving Day and during the rest of the year.

Without help from caring friends like you, hurting people like Tony won't celebrate Thanksgiving – only the harsh realities of living life on the streets. Thanksgiving only deepens their feelings of emptiness. You can help these men and women in their time of need!
Right now the Mission is serving about 400 meals each day. As fall begins to turn to winter we will see that number increase as people seek refuge from the cold. How many meals will you help us provide this Thanksgiving season?
We are thankful for your support and your continued partnership. Without your help, men like Tony may not have had the second chance they needed to have a truly transformed life. That is something to be thankful for!

Yours in Christ's Service,

Jeremy Montgomery
