Register for the Co-Occurring Innovations for the Arkansas Addiction Professional Training

The Co-Occurring Innovations for the Arkansas Addiction Professional training is a one-day, skill-based training on June 29, 2018 in Springdale, Arkansas.

The training will focus on understanding, referring, and treating individuals who have co-occurring disorders. Presenter Tom Durhman, PhD, LADC, will dispel myths related to mental illness treatment and cover the consequential barriers to effective care of co-occurring disorders.

The training will address:
  • Commonly encountered mental disorders;
  • DSM-5 diagnostic criteria;
  • Applicable screening and assessment instruments;
  • Issues surrounding medication management; and
  • Coordinating care with other mental health professionals.
Attendees will be able to earn 7.25 Continuing Education hours (CEs) for this training.

NAADAC and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) have joined forces with the Behavioral Health Service Division of New Mexico to reach out to build awareness and educate high school and college/university students about the benefits and opportunities in the substance use and mental health disorder professions in the hope of increasing the number of college/university students choosing to enter the behavioral health field and specializing in these disciplines. Other partners include the New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), New Mexico State University (NMSU), Western New Mexico University (WNMU), Eastern New Mexico University at Roswell (ENMUR), University of New Mexico (UNM), Behavioral Health Service Division of New Mexico, and the New Mexico Area Health Education Centers.

Nominations For the Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health Are Now Open!

The Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health is presented annually by the National Academy of Medicine. The award recognizes individuals, groups, or organizations for outstanding achievement in improving mental health and is accompanied by a medal and $20,000.

The Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health is awarded to individuals, groups, or organizations that have demonstrated at least one of the following criteria:
  • Contributions to improve understanding of, or treatment for, mental disorders (basic biomedical or clinical research);
  • Innovations in mental health services (counseling, clinical care, prevention, amelioration of symptoms, or promotion of mental health); or,
  • Accomplishments in public policy or public leadership that enhance public understanding of mental disorders, foster advances in science, improve access to or delivery of mental health services, or otherwise promote mental health.
To encourage a broad range of candidates, there are no constraints on the education, profession, or specific discipline of individuals, groups, or organizations.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA) in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital, Recovery Research Institute, is producing a series of four webcasts to educate healthcare professionals about the problems of discriminatory practices and inaccurate perceptions present in dealing with individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) and related conditions.
