Celebrating 40 Years!September 3, 2015
The theme for Recovery Month 2015 is Join the Voices for Recovery: Visible, Vocal, Valuable!, which highlights the value of peer support in educating, mentoring, and helping others. The theme also invites individuals in recovery and their support systems to be catalysts and active change agents in communities, and in civic and advocacy engagements. It encourages individuals to start conversations about the prevention, treatment, and recovery of behavioral health conditions at earlier stages of life. (www.recoverymonth.gov)

From 60 Days to Purple Sash
Written by Brooke Feldman

As a 24-year-old with about 60 days drug-free and in the very infancy of my recovery journey, I looked around and studied the crowd gathering at Memorial Hall in Philly's Fairmount Park.

To go on to walk side by side people just like me gave me unimaginable hope.  It gave me hope that this thing called recovery works.  It gave me hope that I could live the rest of my life without using alcohol and other drugs because these people were doing it.  It gave me hope that I was not alone.  Ultimately, this hope changed my life.

This year, my 10th year of long-term sustained recovery, I will be walking with the Honor Guard in the PRO-ACT Recovery Walks! for the first time.  I will be walking evidence that long-term recovery is possible.  I will be graced with experiencing what it is like to be part of the group leading over 23,000 people through the streets of Philadelphia as we aim to reduce stigma, end discrimination, increase awareness and expand access to prevention, treatment and recovery support services.

Be a Part of the Solution!

Over 650 people died in Philadelphia last year of drug intoxication, approximately 200 more than the year before, and 350 people die across America each day as a result of overdose and other complications from substance use disorder which is a treatable illness.  We cannot afford to allow this to continue.  While this is a complicated problem, helping individuals and families access and sustain long-term recovery is a solution.
On Saturday, September 19th, Philadelphia will host the 14th annual PRO-ACT Recovery Walks! 2015.   Everyone knows an individual or family affected by a substance use disorder.  I urge you to engage your community and to join this awareness campaign.  Participation in the walk takes courage.  Recovery takes courage.
Be a part of the solution!

Call your elected officials and ask them to show their support for recovery by participating in Recovery Walks! 2015 on September 19th.  Below is an example of what you can say:

Hello, I am  __________.

There is no stronger signal to the recovery community than when our elected officials support Recovery Walks! It shows you are willing to stand with them and fight to end the stigma and disgrace associated with substance use disorder. This is a public health crisis.  You can be a part of the solution.

Everyone knows someone in recovery. September 19th is the day to walk with them.

You can go to www.recoverywalks.org to register as a walker, start a team, or to support an individual or team.  We hope you will join us to support recovery and end stigma!
One Veteran Helps Another

The Council received this letter from someone expressing gratitude for the assistance Steve Calderbank provided after he referred his friend to us.

"Thank you for helping "John" with his DD214 request.  Both he and I are grateful to you for what you did for him and all you continue to do for your fellow veterans.  When "John" first called me recently,  he sounded very discouraged.  Your intervention made it possible for him to have access to services he earned in the military.  He thought his dependence on alcohol in the service which created grounds for his discharge classification would imperil any chance whatsoever for him to get his DD214.  Instead, thanks to you,  he is a happy veteran and he has you to thank for it,  which he has done.  He thanked me too when All I did was refer him to you and you did the important part.  I really feel satisfied when a veteran's  story turns out this well.  Unfortunately, some don't in my experience but this one did and I thank you, too!!!!"

A Special Tribute ...In South Florida
So many of our beautiful children have been lost to this horrible disease.
.
As you know my son Daniel lost his battle this year. In honor of Daniel and all those who lost their battle I am hosting a very special Lights of Hope on Sunday September 27th at the Calvary Chapel Sawgrass at 3:00pm to 4:30pm....
.
If you lost a child and would like me to let me read the name of your child in a special prayer ceremony and share a picture please email me at Barbara@theaddictsmom.com  the name, date and picture below with a statement. I ..................................give my permission to the Addict’s Mom to read my child’s name and use their picture at the Addict’s Mom Lights of Hope on September 27th, 2015 at the Calvary Chapel Sawgrass in Davie Florida.
.
A picture is not required but would be appreciated, if you post one it will be shared on the big screen at the church sanctuary.
.
I know this is hard for me and you. But I will not let our children’s lives be in vain. I hope you will participate.
.
For those of you would live in Florida, it would mean so much to me if you would join me on this special day to light a candle of hope.
.
I could use volunteers to help setup and to promote this event.
.
Please don’t lose hope as my son Daniel constantly reminded me never lose hope, even if it is the size of a mustard seed.
.
Much love to all addict’s moms and their families...Barbara

Approximately 85 million Americans say they have been affected a great deal by addiction. It crosses all social and economic boundaries, yet we do not discuss addiction's devastating reach or the lack of resources to address it.

The time is now to properly define and treat addiction as a public health crisis. We have a goal of 1,000 signatures in support of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA, or Bill numbers S.524/H.R.953). We will deliver these signatures to Capitol Hill on October 5, the day after the UNITE to Face Addiction rally.

What is CARA?
CARA addresses the devastating issue of addiction with specific, positive steps:
  • Effective treatment alternatives to incarceration
  • Implementation of naloxone trainings for law enforcement so that more lives can be saved from opiate overdoses
  • Expanding programs that provide screening, early intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) to adolescents and young adults
  • Evidence-based opioid and heroin treatment and intervention programs, gaining more access to medication-assisted treatment
  • Comprehensive prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) to track the dispensing of opioids
Millions are angry, frustrated and feel no one recognizes the reality and the fear that our children could die. Along with the parents and families who are facing, or have faced, substance abuse disorders with their teen and young adults, we demand leadership, hope and the chance to become part of the solution.

Every signature is vital, as we will share the petition and your voice with legislators on October 5.

Thank you for your support.

September 1 CHP 52 v 2 TWELVE STEPPING WITH STRENGTH FROM THE PSALM

All day long you plot destruction .Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; your an expert at telling lies .
(GODS BIG BOOK)

STEP 6 - Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Well are you ready ! I struggle with this one all day everyday ! God takes it ,and I take it right back and if you don't do what I want then their will be hell to pay . My mouth can be one of the most destructive forces on this planet. It takes alot of discipline and training to think before you speak. So before you rip someone to shreds today say a little prayer before you speak .

Proverb 18 v 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,And those who love it will eat its fruit.
(GODS BIG BOOK) By Joseph Dickerson
