By Marion Callihan STAFF WRITER    O ne Perkasie family is determined to save lives. Jane and Stephen Straw lost their 19-year-old daughter, Anna, to a heroin overdose Nov. 9, 2012, but refused to give in to the stigma that shames so many families into silence when a loved one loses the battle with drugs. In crafting their daughter's obituary, they were candid about her death. Now they are allowing their church, The Presbyterian Church of Deep Run, to use their daughter's name for a free community education program aimed at shedding the stigma of drug addiction and battling heroin use, a crisis that keeps growing in Bucks and Montgomery counties. The Anna Straw Initiative, led by parishioner Jim Kosa, is working with The Council of Southeastern Pennsylvania to address the growing problem of addiction to drugs and alcohol in Upper Bucks County. The initiative, which begins Feb. 2, is an extension of the council's Family Education Program, which is offered in other Bucks locations and surrounding counties, too. "We want to tap into resources that are already in the community and make them more available to people," said Kosa.   Kosa said the Anna Straw Initiative will be an ongoing education program aimed at making people who are experiencing addiction feel less alone about stepping forward and reaching for help, family support and information that could save lives. The four two-hour sessions will include an orientation to addiction and how to deal with it.   The Doylestown-based Council of Southeastern Pennsylvania is offering its expertise and support for the sessions, which will be held at the Bedminster church. The council's education program has been offered across the region for the past 15 years. The training at the church will incorporate the most updated information about the drug crisis, its impact on families, rehabilitation and life-saving drugs, such as Naloxone, which is available in the state and counters the effects of opiods. Try Anything    Researchers Test Anti-Cocaine Vaccine     In a decades-long search for a vaccine that could fight drug abuse, scientists came upon one that can potentially annul the addictive buzz of cocaine. The vaccine, which was reported in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics onDec. 22, was developed by researchers from The Scripps Research Institute in California. There's Always One          Addiction Counselor Charged                             with Drug Trafficking     Members of the Major Crimes Task Force  said Tuesday that they have arrested an addiction counselor for selling drugs to an undercover officer. Roberta Payne, 52, was charged with aggravated trafficking in drugs. The Ohio Attorney General said Payne was arrested Fridayevening  after she allegedly sold more than 2,000 morphine pills and 30 milligrams of liquid morphine to the undercover officer. "What is particularly disappointing is that a person who has been placed in a position of trust apparently abused that trust by using her job for illegal activities which are counterproductive to her position," said Police Chief Patterson. Nationally, 1 in 5 high-school students uses painkillers without a prescription, while about half of young people who get hooked on heroin became addicted to prescription painkillers first, the Dayton Daily News reported.  "Most people don't realize that prescription opioids and heroin are close cousins, and heroin use is simply a later phase of the same addiction," the lawmakers testified in support of the bill. CONTINUED @ Dispatch.com  Breaking Bad in Brisbane    Australia Facing Meth Crisis   Australian seizures of methampheta- mine have increased almost 10 times in the last few years. In 2011 there were 44 amphetamine-like substances seized. In 2014, there were 415. Police raided almost 750 meth labs last year and expect to raid many more in 2015. Although alcohol is the most important risk factor, less is known about the significance of different patterns of drinking.
